I'm interested in doing joint Germanics & Film at Trinity and there are some thing's i'd like to ask.

Could students of either Germanics or Film (or both!) give me your opinions on the courses? Are they what you expected? What stage are you at in the course now?

In general, how are languages taught at Trinity? What methods?

You spend a year or two abroad, when doing Germanics. What happens to the Film Studies course during this period? Do you have to miss something?

Any other info you think might help me is also welcome. Thanks!

I don't think any of the regular posters here do Germanics or film. Although Educat, the current education officer, might be of some assistance.

I'm a first year doin German...here are my thoughts!

The Germanic dep. in trinity is excellent. Much better than French, Spanish etc., I think. There's a great relationship between the staff and students and there are loads of events organised during the year to meet people from all years and courses : xmas party, 24 hour teach-a-thon this year!, fortnightly meet up in a pub to speak german, it's a lot easier when you're pissed!german play and theatre etc.

As far as I know, if you choose German through TSM (German and Film), a year abroad, although optional, isn't part of the course requirement.

In first year you'll have 3 hours of language classes with a small group (20 or less). You'll probably get quite close to that group and the teachers are really positive and involved. You have one hour of spoken german, one hour of Landeskunde (area studies...post-war history, politics etc.) and one hour of literature. Exams are pretty straightforward. Had my oral and aural already and they were both so simple, really relaxed and casual...none of the leaving cert 'stressed-outness'. The standard is a bit of a step up from Leaving Cert but after a year, you'll improve so much. The material is quite interesting...so studyin isn't too much of a problem. (my course doesn't involve literature though!)

check out www.tcd.ie/germanic_studies and e-mail one of the staff about the Erasmus/Film Studies issue.
