It filters/limits traffic from known P2P badboys like the RIAA for searching your system.. It's basically a list of known ip ranges that they search from and that range is blocked. Nothing major.

No experience with it as i don't use p2p/torrents for downloading anything. (torrents for linux distros/large OS projects.).

But its basically used to "blacklist" ip's such as the RIAA etc. Its used to "protect your privacy" on P2P/Torrent networks from .. well lets be honest, from downloading things you shouldn't be downloading.

so it blocks your IP address?

No, it blocks the RIAA's etc IP address's. i.e > They won't be able to connect to you to see what you are downloading. It'll stop you uploading/connecting to them hence no phone call from Esat telling you your a bold boy.
Then again i'm not sure cause i don't use it, i only know that k++ had a similiar functionality because a friend (who thought he was l33t explaining this to me) used it.

What do you mean ? I know about IPs but how will it block? is it stealth or something ?

They try to connect to you but it blocks them before they can, simple really. It also stops you from connecting to naughty IPs.

"PeerGuardian is an application currently being used by Internet users worldwide to block the IP addresses of undesirables such as Anti-P2P, Ad servers, Spyware servers, Government etc." - http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/peerguardian_2_review.cfm

Well as far as i know it simply means that when your on a P2P network/torrent network, it won't allow those IP's addresses that are blacklisted to connect to you. P2P/torrent works by you downloading and uploading from someone else on the network. This application won't allow the IP addresses that are blacklisted to download/upload to you.

peerguardin or protowall...they both do the same thing....could never find out if one is any better than the other....you can use Blocklist Manager to update the blocklists for both.....

protowall is better as it blocks udp which peerguardian dosnt do yet (they are making the new one now)

however protowall is trickier to use...

at the end of the day if uve got a fairly tightly configured firewall u shudnt need either...but no harm if you are taking risks that is!

How would a firewall decide an IP is being used by a company employed by the MPAA to investigate illegal file downloading, then block that IP?

I was under the impression the newer firewalls on the tighter settings blocked all possible scans from any ips...well thats what my mcafee tells me-witness the gazillions of access requests it blocks from all sorts of ips...

i duno, im no expert-but then again im not worried as im not taking risk :)

Well they wouldnt need to scan your pc. The traffic comes in with all the rest of the bit torrent traffic, which if you've a firewall, set it to let that traffic in.

Though some of the IPs on the list are real though.
When I first installed, it blocked www.argos.co.uk, all of the Geocities network, and the Lufthansa mememer login page. Was well confused!

Just make sure it's set to block only P2P traffic and not your HTTP traffic Drapper and everything should work OK. If you start losing connections to webpages it more then likely that you forgot to switch it's HTTP traffic option, like snapscan1212p did ;)
