bottom wisdoms are the messy ones as if they screw up the nerves here you can end up with a numb lip, and can affect taste buds etc

    3-5 days recovery recommended

depending what PRSI /work status you are at you may be able to get a referal to get it done through medical card ( longer wait though)

Hey formatman cheers for the response. I dont have a medical card and am in london currently but was thinking if u know any good dentist in dublin, id fly home if it were reasonable enough(its the top ones that are giving me most hassle) i feel like a bloody blowfish and sorry to be crude but BJ's are getting less easier as i have my mouth full!

Can anyone suggest cost per tooth on average in dublin? have looked up the web, nothing really of much use there...

try Doctor Tom O'Connor in Dun Laoghaire 353 1 2809576 , my current dentist but can be pricey , likes recommending crowns for everything , nice clean surgery

or previous Dentist/Surgeon , Dr Brendan Bastible in sandycove , Glastule Dun Laoghaire , don't have a numbe handy

I think he does the wisdom teeth at a local hospital
Great Dentist , he spotted my wisdom teeth when I didn't even know they were there

Bad points , his normal surgery is a bit grotty and his wife is great (not) with people !

I am having a lot of trouble with one of my bottom ones at the moment, the first bottom one was fine and was a simple extraction, €80, the second is growing sidewards into the rest of my teeth and requires surgery. Theres about a 6 month waiting list for it and my dentist told me he can't do it himself as it's specialist surgery. He said it's going to cost me in the region of €1200 *groan*

I had my wisdom teeth taken out several years ago over the course of three sessions. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, the dentist extracted the tooth and then there's a bit of blood involved, all I had to do was bite on a swab for a couple of hours until it stopped. A couple of days later the whole thing was healed. Had them taken out as my top wisdom teeth was nipping against my gums. A lot depends on the dentist involved into how it all goes.

Best of all the first extraction took place on the spot when I was offered it and the remainder was done over the next two weeks, and it cost me nothing as I was still 18 and still a student up here in Norn' Iron! No waiting list and no cost! :p

I had mine taken out about 4 years ago, had to go into hospital (I think it was in Clane) for an operation for just one day. My wisdom teeth had to be removed (they weren't even up at this stage) cause they were coming up with a nerve in their direct path.

Yeah I know what you mean, when I woke up after it felt like someone had punched the crap out of my jaws. After a couple of days your grand though.

I think I was covered fairly well with VHI at the time, cause it was an operation that was required, so they paid up, thankfully. But I think the whole thing cost including the bit VHI paid was £900-1500. I think I only had to pay £150 or so.

I had all four and another removed in the Dental hospital here in Dublin.

Pretty painless but for the fact I had to teach one of the students how to pull the last one out. IDIOT, but he got some shock when I started talking to him.

cost was very cheap (450 yoyo I think) but a long waiting list.

Seemingly it's cheaper to get done in England than here, so if you are getting paid in sterling I'd get it done in England, honestly.

Mine were sore for a week but 5 teeth out in one go is really brutal.

u can get upper wisdom teeth removed on the NHS, any general dentist can do it. it will cost a tenner although xrays and an exam fee will be more and he mauy want to clean them up a bit.anyway shouldnt cost any more than 25-30 quid mayb a little more. dont get anything else done though.

Cheers Lomb, but isnt the NHS different than Bupa as this is private??

I had two extracted in one session sitting in the dentists chair. He gave me tonnes of anaesthetic (?), and then got to work. I'd been bracing myself for quite a bit of pulling, but he just cut the connective tissue around the teeth and slid them out. The upper one was growing out into my cheek and the lower one was growing horizantally and beginning to put pressure on the adjoining teeth.

After the numbness wore off, I was a bit sore and I couldn't eat because the two teeth were on opposing side of the mouth. But it passed quickly enough. I also know hoever that it's not that straightforward for everyone.

the NHS applies to all residents of the UK. basically the government fixes fees at a ridiculously low level forcing dentists to work on that system. for an upper widom tooth removal u would pay 10 quid and the NHS contributes 20% more or 2 quid, taking the dentists fee to 12 quid.

Why do people get their wisdom teeth out ? One of mine is in an awfully awkward place and is kind of uncomfortable & doesnt look great....would that be reason enough to it taken out ?

the NICE guidelines in the uk state 3 bouts of severe pain or unrestorable decay or decaying the adjacent tooth as the only points they can be removed in the NHS. however its different in the real world obviously.

still it all has to be weighed against difficulty and nerve damage risk.

babykitten - have you actually had a dentist tell you that your wisdom teeth have to be taken out??

Tusky - Your dentist would of said something to you about them if they needed to be taken out. If your are unsure, visit your dentist, they will take an xray to determine if they need to be removed or not.

Two of my wisdom teeth are up and fine. Two others are still in the process of breaking through but the dentist said they are fine. The first two were painful at times but plenty of neurofen plus helped with that.

    A.

Got 2 of mine removed - was a lot less painful than I expected, the only thing that was bad was the crunch sound when they were taken out...was out for 3 days (and a weekend)...had been in agony with my wisdom teeth for 8 years, getting them removed was great :)

I also got mine done by Dr. Halpenny. But as far as I know, he's an oral surgeon which is why it's so expensive. Although the VHI paid for mine.
I had it done in Mount Carmel, done under anaesthetic, as my wisdom teeth hadn't come down yet. (In fact there wasn't enough space for them which is why I had to get them out in the first place). They had to basically break the teeth into tiny shards and get them out that way.
The operation took about an hour and I went home from the hospital the same day.
But I reacted badly to the anaesthetic so it took me about a week to get back on track.
I had huge holes in my mouth for weeks and food kept getting stuck in them!
    Yuck!

the hospital and sedation fees make up a large part of it, not the dentist fee tbh.

Got mine done by dental students down here in cork in the UCH. it was only bout 80 euro. Students do it all the grease work but the dentidt comes in and does the pulling, student stitches it up. Bein honest the stitchin was a bit patchy as i had to go to my dentists two days later to get em taken out and the relief was unreal!!

Actually reminds of another time i got a tooth extracted, dentist said there would probably be shards of the tooth in my gums for a while but there was one big bit that wouldnt come out nearly two weeks later. But durin a match one day got a slap of the ball in d face and it bust open the gum and blood went everywhere but the shard of tooth flew out. The lads couldnt understand why i was covered in blood but was smiling like a mad man and thankin the guy who did it!!

I got one ripped out on Wedn. Only took a few mins. I have to go back for another. He gave me the option of getting a general anaesthetic and having them taken out but I don't trust GAs. Thu I was ok and was fine once I kept taking painkillers but Fri the wound got infected even though I'm on anti-biotics and the painkillers gave me no relief so I had to go home and took some stronger painkillers my mother had and I barely got relief. Today I'm fine though and haven't taken any painkillers since lunchtime.

The next tooth is growing sideways so that should be really fun. Bupa is paying for it all. Thank god for good health insurance.
