Does anybody know the % of this country covered by broadband.

I am doing an essay over the next 3 or 4 days.

Is the main reasons for the lack if broadband is the lack of investment.

    What is the ultimate solution?

    Is it better regulation?

Are there any worthwhile moves to improve irish broadband access?

What can be done to improve net access among the peoples of this county?

    a) Define what broadband is - Upload and Download speeds, latency - v. important
    b) Are you interested in % population or geographical area coverage
    c) You can safely say that the big 5 cities are at least 80% covered so more than 60% of the population is covered (Dublin, Waterford, Galway, Cork & Limerick)
    d) There is 100% satellite bb coverage; but some would argue that it's not really broadband
    e) Who are the bb providers - eircom have about 200 exchanges enabled out of 1100 - each exchange has an average coverage radius of about 4km
Who are the FWA players - how many sites - what coverage area
Who are the cable players - franchise areas, etc.
    f) Future plans - WiMax, 4G, etc.

    Any further questions PM me

Not sure how to define 100% coverage, but there's definitely not 100% availability. There are many people who can't get satellite, e.g. those in:
    • rented houses without permission to put up the dish
    • apartments facing the wrong way
    • apartment complexes where the "house rules" prohibit mounting anything on the outside of the building
    • possibly in houses/apartments in the "shadow" of a taller building

People in protected/listed buildings could also have trouble.

about 50% as I explained in detail in the recent past. Never confuse availability (50%) with coverage (nominally about 65%)

if its not available you are not really covered ...are you ?

Thanks for all that info. It is of great help and very much appreciated.

To get a graph on how ireland prepares to other EU countries - where could I find it?
