Cheap Therapy

is it poetry or just cheap therapy? my innermost thoughts scattered
on a page like leaves blowing through a park on a windy day,
an opening, a rent, in my soul spewing forth acidic thoughts and truth
for others to pore over and seek meaning in, perhaps even criticise or
compliment on the fact that I've articulated what they are feeling,
even if they aren't saying it themselves

Are we just a support group for each other, safe in our anonymity
sharing the thoughts that we hide from those closest to us,
for fear of rejection or changed opinions to our twisted minds
that we hide behind our innocent eyes and false smiles

Does it help cleanse our souls, these words on a page,
or does it make the wounds harder to heal,
remembering forever in print, the pain that we feel,
would it not be better to write it, then tear it up and leave it behind,

Do I write here because of a need to pour my heart out to strangers,
or because I know you'll read this and see what I can't say to your face...

    Both.

This poem has a rambling, stream-of-consciousness quality to it that somehow works for me. I like your style.

I also like the questions it raises, as I'm sure everyone here can relate.
Why do we share? Is it just to get it out of our system, or the recognition, or the sense of safe anonymity as you suggest? Probably a mix of all three.
I wonder how many people on this forum would feel comfortable at an open mic night!

Well done :) But I'm not sure I agree with your point that we'd be better off writing something and tearing it up afterwards (or deleting it in the case of modern technology)..I never could see the point of that psychological exercise ;) Seems like such a waste of vitriolic creativity!
