any listeners? a fantastic songwriter, the best i've listened to hands down, and all his albums show progression and wanting to try new things musically always pushing the boundaries but always making quality tracks. i love the guy and wish he was still making music as there is no one else like him around at the moment

I wanted to start listening to him. But after he died I decided not to. Like Jeff Buckley I'll inevitably always think of the potential and the loss, instead of just out-and-out liking hte music.

Have to say Elliot Smith is on constant rotation for me.

    Great music, great lyrics.

Definatly. I always turn to an album of his at some point. Either/Or is a beautiful one! He has some real emotion in there. Beautiful is all i can think

i find ben kweller is fairly similar although he's a bit more upbeat most of the time.

not sure i agree with that at all, kweller is grand but not very similar to smith, he might sound a little like him but thats where it ends...

Bought Figure 8 a few months ago and I love it. I'm not really into singer/songwriter stuff but Elliott Smith seems a step above the rest.
So many good songs on this album, Son of Sam, Junk-Bond Trader, Can't make a sound, Everything means nothing to me. It's great.
Have to buy a few more of his albums.

I think elliott smith is different in that he did leave a legacy in the form of 6 albums, 3 of which are absolutly fantastic and the rest are pretty damn good too. Jeff Buckley left one (which isn't anywhere near as good as the last 4 elliott smith albums)

Very good isn't she? Very nice person as well.. Spent a good couple of hours chatting and that about music and stuff in general with her..

Funny the way Elliot Smith only really got famous posthumously.. but I suppose that's always the way

This thread had made me get back out my old elliot smith records and give them another spin. Bled White from XO is my favorite song of his, cool tune.

That's untrue. He wasn't hugely famous but certainly did have a big following, his redbox show from 2000 was absolutly packed to the rafters, never been to a gig that was so uncomfortably full.

i have to agree - elliott smith was very famous before he died its just his last album was in 2000 so there was no new material for uneducated fans to listen.
sure he won an oscar didnt he for good will hunting?

Interested in posters comments on Mary Lou Lord, I have a few live recordings of her and Elliot, namely 'Shake Sugaree' & 'Birthday Boy'.

Is her solo stuff worth a listen?? And if so any recommendations??

I am a big fan. I actually really like from a basement on a hill. Some of the lyrics on it are even more apt cause of his death.
Where can I get these un released tracks ??

Love elliott smith. One of the most underrated artists of the last 10 years.

I think there's some unreleased songs on sweetadeline.net

Saw Elliott Smith play live in Dublin twice. Gave a great performance both times - he was able to turn tracks which are quite mellow on his albums into rocking affairs on stage.

First time he was supported by Quasi (his old bandmates from Heatmiser) and it was such a great gig.

    Great great songwriter.

"Voice of an Angel, face of a boxer" is what John peel said about him in 1999 when I heard of him first....... Just such a great singer, and then when you actually listen to the Lyrics he just gets better and better, I was so annoyed after missing him in dublin "ah, sure he will tour again"..........

I heard his Suicide is now under investigation as a possible murder? any truth in this?

    I prefer X/O to Either/Or

no not really, there are some oddities surrounding his death but most people (his family included) believe it was suicide. www.sweetadeline.net for all things elliott
