    IMDB

I just saw the movie yesterday and I am not sure what the release date is in Ireland (could not see it on upcoming movies on Entertainment.ie) but nevertheless I want you guys to look out for it. I actually cried and I have NEVER cried at a movie before.

It is a look at racism in modern LA through the eyes of various characters in very different situations. I have read reviews that the sheer number of storylines running in parallel made it hard for some people to connect with any of the characters but I thought that the entire group should be looked at as a whole, their actions and thoughts being the social conscience that exists today.

Certainly one of the more appetizing movies to be released lately IMO.

PS It stars Brendan Fraser, Sandra Bullock, Ryan Phillippe and Ludicras but try not and let that dissuade you!

I'd imagine they saw it because they're listed as being in Minneapolis and the film has just gone on limited release in the US...

Hmm... Anyone one of those particular cast members would be enough to dissuade me usually. I'll hold my reservations though.

But it does have Don Cheadle.... genius!

Will be watching an "advanced screening" of this tomorrow night... will let ye know if it's any good!

Written and directed by a man called Paul Haggis. Looking at his past efforts on IMDB.. seems quite talented! Most recently, he wrote the screenplay to 'Million Dollar Baby'

    This is a brilliant film.
One of the best I have seen in years.
    8.6/10 on IMDB.
A relief to watching someting so good amid the Summer Blockbuster drivel.

    It's out on Friday!

Fantastic film... read a great article on it in Empire and how a lot of the material in it is real life experiences of director Paul Haggis!

Saw it. Brilliant, brilliant film. Its amazing how they can juggle all those characters. Really great pace too, feels like its 3 hours long because of all the stories but it goes really fast. A lot of racial themes but it doesnt feel fake or forced, it feels very real. Everyone should be made to see this film.

No question that its the best film this summer, probably the best film so far this year.

Definantly up there in the best (as reflected in my Favourite Films Of the year so far)!

Matt Dillon really was truly fantastic in it though!

Yeah, I heard that Matt Dillon is outstanding in it. Hopefully this might give his career a new lease of life. I've always thought he was a really underrated actor.

Crash is one hell of a good film. Have it on Dvd for the last few months and was looking for someone else that saw it.

Really has you thinking after you watch it.

I thought it was a joke of a film. If they want to make a film about racial tensions and issues thats fine...but do it in a little more suttle way. Every scene and almost every single spoken sentence has something to do with race...that anoyed me.

Also am I crazy, or is the music used in this from Rome Total War?

Excellent film, my favourite film of the year without a doubt, easy to see why it is so highly rated on imdb, no. 69 at the minute, I would imagine that this will go even higher as it is realeased around the world.
I loved the way that they integrated all the characters in different ways, and their stories were all really good as well.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Hmm it was a good movie but the race issue should've been a lot more subtle - it felt far too forced. I agree with Tusky - every scene didn't need to be about trying to challenge our concepts of racism (or somesuch).

The stories were mostly good and the characters interesting but I felt that coincidence was used too often to try to tie the plot lines together. Certain set pieces were set out to shock but I felt they had been signposted too much, e.g.
when the girl got "shot", it was obvious that the bullets were blank but we still needed to be shown the pack later
    .

Some of it looked very pretty and well shot though, such as
when they were trapped in the car - really good close up camerawork and tension. Or when Ryan Phillipe's character was in a shoot out and we cut to the rear of the car to see the muzzle flash.
    .

There was a nice score too.

Definetely worth seeing, but also somewhat overrated. Still take what you can these days at the cinema.

I saw it last night and while I thought it was good, I didnt think it was amazing. It kinda felt to me like a film that was trying to make itself come across as a good film rather than actually being a good film. I know I didnt put that very well, but I dont know how else to say it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 856 ✭✭✭StonedParadoX

only without the full stops after the word spoiler...

sounds like a great film, will have to keep an eye out for it

I caught it last night. Really, really good. Some great performances, especially Matt Dillon. His speech to to the black woman (Jolanda?) in the clinic about
how his fathers firm, which employed 23 black guys who were payed an equal wage to whites in a time when to do so was rare, went under because affirmative action legislation led to contracts going to minority owned firms
was fantastic. Check this out for sure.

Yeah, I thought the racism was a bit ott to begin with, but I suppose when you're dealing with multiple characters, you have to condense things in order to keep the script under 4 hours, and I don't think this film would have suited epic proportions.

Also, as the film progressed, characters started to come into their own a little and started reacting to racial discrimination by lashing out at society rather than being racist themselves (e.g. black film director and middle eastern shop owner)

The one thing i have heard people critisise the most is the unrealistic characters and the unlikely coincidences. Well, I thought the characters were quite believable, as most of them had experienced something during the film which could be deemed as life altering, and surely we can allow the coincidenses to be put down to artistic license.

All in all, the best film I've seen this year

Great film...not perfect but really enjoyable and so much better than most of the drivel we have to chose from!

    ixoy: call me stupid but
I didn't realise that about the girl until I was shown it...I couldn't work it out!
    :D.

Quite a good film, i saw it last night.

Really liked the plot...excellent and with a bit of humour scattered throughout

Really good, but its hard to follow all the plots.
I'll watch it again some time.

Superb. It needed more Tony Danza though.

I loved lots of it but I thought it was trying to be too Arthouse and you can't have an Arthouse film with Sandra Bullock starring.

I loved this film. Saw it the other night. The latino locksmith guy was the best! Dont know the actor, though.

One thing that pissed me off, during the film there was one guy sitting in front of me and my friends who constantly laughed soooo loud, i think to p1ss off his mate beside him. It turned out that anytime he laughed(even at jokes that werent that funny) everyone ended up laughing at his outrageous laugh.

Excellent film - some similarities to Pulp Fiction, but not in a rip-off way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭bada_bing

just saw this last night and i thought it was the most contrived movie ever, i kept thinking to myself every 3 mins "god not another scene/line about racism", it was just done to death for the whole movie. It felt so insulting as if the director felt he had to permeate every scene with confrontational racism just to get the message across and the coincidences were just plain ridiculous. Even so forgetting the coincidences that helped to link the sub plots together, some of the character's actions in some scenes were just laughable and trite at times.......

    I thought it was deadly.

Never boring. Good performances, good script, good film.
