Waxoyl - where to buy it ?

I have seen it for sale on d'net for £25STG for the starter kit incl. pump ansd 2.5L of the stuff, and £19 for an additional 5L. Where's a good place to buy in Dublin ? Or better from the net ?

I was poking around under the bonnet of the Stag, contemplating the upcoming carb rebuild I have to do, and I noticed that inside the fenders are dry - lots of access points for Waxoyl to go in, so I'd better do it.

    Cheers

    Frank

PS. speaking of carbs, the car must be psychic. I mean, it has been behaving itself impeccably, starting its engine in a fraction of a second any time I have tried it. Was changing the front antirillbar bushes at the weekend and noticed that one of the gaiters on the track-rod-end is perished. Another one for the "Snag list" - at least parts are cheap, £17 from the UK for a track rod + all the rubber bits

You can get the sprayer, tanks and refills in Halfords. Not sure of price though!

There's one in the Blanchardstown Shopping centre, in the westend retail park (beside KFC).
Think the other is coolock but not sure on that one.
Found the blanch one very helpful for ordering in Haynes manuals and any other questions i had.

I ended up getting a Waxoyl kit from Halfords in Blanchardstown. I now reek of white-spirit and wax, that stuff gets everywhere. Still, it's good for the car :)

Hi all.. I just got a classic a few weeks ago and I was advised to get it Waxoyl'd... I had never heard of this but was advised it was the thing to do. I wasn't planning on doing it myself as I was told to get it done professionally wouldn't be too expensive.

Since you guys are chatting about it, what would you advise??? Is it something whereby you can do it yourself or should I really get it done professionally. If anyone could shed some light on this, that would be great. Maybe the cost of getting it done professionally if anyone knows and where also might help.
    Cherrs D

I did find Halfords to be really good with matching paint and cleaning materials. I would use them again

    Hi Corelon

The trick with any rust protection is preparation. The surface must be spotlessly clean and dry as a bone. Then you apply the wax. Given that the underside of your car is most vulnerable to rust, this can be tricky to achieve unless you have a lift or pit. It is also quite time consuming.

I got mine done professionally in Holland before I got the car at a cost of €800. It took 4 days of effort/wait time to complete, and it is an excellent job. If you give a car that is less than spotless to your mechanic, the chances are that they'll spray over the dirt, trapping it and any moisture it contains against your steelwork. You need someone who has the space and equipment to thoroughly clean the area to be treated, and let it dry thoroughly before oiling.

You'll need to remove the exhaust before sealing the underside as well - my rusty silencer was puctured by the high pressure of the cleaning hose.

For box sections, sills, wings, doors, etc. you might find it beneficial to use a thinner mix of wax and spirits in order to penetrate the various cavaties completely. Make sure you don't bung up any drain holes, as you'll just be trapping water within the panel which will make things much worse.

If you have the lift, space and time nobody will do a better job at this than you, as no-one knows your car better and no-one will give half the damn that you will :)

Bejasus that sounds like an awful lot of hard work.

Hmmm apparantly "rust colouration" is coming back in.

heh heh or "British Leyland Orange".
Jeez, what am I saying ?!

It's not that hard work - an hour and a half saw all of the obvious bits in my car done - lots of access points on my car behind all the panels. I haven't done the underneath yet, but will just use Waxoyl for inside the chassis runners. The chassis itself and all those bits, I will just cover with brush-on tar type stuff (Hammerite make this). Thankfully the car is clean-ish underneath so won't take long to clean before putting this stuff on.

Since the Waxoyl kit is so easy to use, I think I'll use it on the MX5 too at some stage.

I know this post was initially about where to purchase Waxoyl, but if you wish to get your classic properly looked after then I can recommend the following individual...

    http://www.before-n-after.co.uk/

They are based near Reading in the UK and will provide a car for your use while you are getting your classic Waxoyl'ed as the process takes about 6 hours.

Normally costs say £450 + VAT  to get a large classic car (Jag E-Type, XK120 etc) done with them, but through my research they seem to be the most thorough and offer the best guarantees :D .

I am reviving this post to see if anybody knows of a garage/mechanic who actually does the job properly somewhere around Dublin?

Anybody else interested in getting their car Waxoiled professionally? We could get a group price :)
