In order to try and use my battery poperly on my lappy, I have a plug timer thing that turns on every so often. Is this a good idea or a bad idea? I leave my laptop on more or less for days at a time. I have the timer set so it comes on for about 2.5 hours, off for about 100mins, on for 2.5hours off for 100 mins etc. Should this be ok? If it is on the battery and im doing something thats heavy on juice i have to turn on the power but thats grand, cos i'll be on the comp then.

Why would you do that ? What kind of laptop do you have ? If you just leave it plugged in and the battery is fully charged the laptop should just run off mains power and bypass your battery.

Sounds like a good way to stop the cells in the battery becoming useless.

    Simple but effective.

Explain how ? If the laptop is running off the mains the battery will be fully charged, constantly charging and recharging will reduce the battery life if nothing else.

If you dont use the battery the cells will die.

That is why it is a good idea to let a rechargable battery fully discharge every now and again.

Leaving your battery in while running off mains WILL reduce the time the battery will give you.

OP: That sounds like a good idea, might look into that myself.

    Acer Ferrari 3400
Any laptop I've ever used has never done this.
Don't most laptops throttle the processor when running on battery anyway(mine does)?
Well what if you wanted to play a game, which needed high processor power?
The only way to achieve this would be to take out the battery and play the game.

I suppose it depends on the laptop. The ones I've used will charge the battery until it's charged and then switch to the mains and run off that. If you want more processing power there's usually some sort of quick set option which allows you to switch between various states such as Increased Battery Life, Higher Performance, Desktop etc.
