I wouldnt really rate nice as a good destination. I found it very dirty and run-down for much of the city. When i went we spent a day looking around and kept moving. Cannes and monaco are'nt to far away, which are good places to see. If you rent a car i would recommend touring around some of the smaller villages in the mountainous regions. There is also a gorge somewhere near nice which i think is the deepest in europe.
If i were to go again i would just avoid nice. As you move around you'll find some real gems in the mountains and fabulous senery around the coast.

i really liked Nice when i was there, its good for a base anyway to visit the other towns/cities around, there was a nice hostel called notre dame http://www.gomio.com/tfwebforms/hosteloverview.aspx?hostelId=2112&languageId=1 ,the guy who ran it gave me and my boyfriend a great deal for a large room, with a balcony. the beach is gorgeous there,it is quite touristy however you cant beat sitting on the beach at night with a few drinks watching the sea,or walking around the differant areas at night. theres a nice kind of chilled out area with small coffee shops and bars,on these small winding streets.id definately go back however not for longer then 5/7 nights!

My wife and I are regular travellers to Nice - we went twice last year and rented an apartment for 2 weeks which was about a 5 minute walk from the beach. We haven't hired a car yet. The best things about Nice are:
    1) The climate & swimming in the warm clean sea!
    2) Walks along the promenade.
    3) Good selection of restaurants to cater for most budgets.
    4) It's fantastic proximity to the airport. A 10 minute bus ride and you're in the centre.
    5) I've never seen any drunken/disorderly behaviour at night.
    6) The inexpensive wine, e.g. 12 euros for 5 litres of Merlot. We brought 30 litres back last time :D

    The cons:
    1) I got a little bored in the second week. Car rental would be a good idea for extended stays but this pushes up the cost of your holiday.
    2) Accomodation is not cheap during peak season (June - August).

If you're looking for a hotel, we also stayed in the Hotel Rivoli (3*) which was absolutely fine. I see a lot of backpackers staying the Hotel Rue de Paradis (2*) and it looks fine as well. Don't worry about places to eat, just wander around there are plenty to choose from.

Spent 5 months there last year and hated it..

I found the social life terrible.. just one good pub.. O'Neils.
However I was there over the winter...
The only good thing was the skiing close-by.
I was there a few years ago during the summer and
    wasn't too impressed then either..
Monaco is just around the corner though :-)

Nice city, scenery, surrounding countryside, food etc. and reasonable beaches.
just very very very dull nightlife.

Was pretty dissapointed by Monaco too. Worth seeing for about two hours but don't go expecting it to live up to its hype.

dulll, dull, dull....most over-hyped town in europe...nice was swinging in the 60's and 70's and that reputation has still lingered....Now, even some of the French themselves are beginning to consider it naff - preferring to go to Corsica.

Nice is a quality town. Im headin over in the summer again, have been twice before. The beach is class, it can get a little too hot in the summer, but its on the coast so there is always a nice breeze. The social life wouldnt be as good as dublin, but there are some quality places to drink at night. My mate has been living over therhe for the past year and loves the place.
The woman are meant to be class as well as there are people from all over the world coming and going.

I spent all of last summer in nice. Myself and a few friends gotta a classy little apartment for dirt cheap. So central too! Good places to go out- McMahons pub, check point... Waynes is another lively spot but wasnt too keen on it, the food there was gorgeous though!! Good quality steaks and then pop down into the plaza for an ice-cream mmmm! ah the memories!!!

Same as above. Had a horrific holiday there in 2002, only made sligtly enjoyable by some of the older towns in the mountains.
