Well done England and Northern Ireland

    Kudos where it's due---

    England 2 - Albania 0

A stunning goal from Michael Owen just before half-time and a second from Robbie Fowler just before 90 minutes gave England a well deserved victory over the Albanians, and gives the Liverpool front line their 6th and 7th goal in a row for England. Well done.

    Northern Ireland 3 - Iceland 0

Sammy McIlroy's boys did Northern Ireland proud in their biggest competitive victory for six years. A cracker of a goal from David Healy opened the floodgates and Michael Hughes and (débutant) George McCarthy added to the tally to fire 3 past the Icelandic keeper in a second half that kept the *just over* 6,500 fans riveted. Apparently, or so one commentator said, it's Northern Ireland's first time scoring more than one goal in a match in Windsor Park.

Scotland, Wales and Holland all bow out of the World Cup tonight, and with the possibility of not having Brazil there also, it's shaping up to be an interesting and entertaining tournament... which Ireland, for once, have a pretty strong chance in.

I think Steve Staunton put it best regarding Ireland's World Cup prospects:
"Ireland can beat Holland on the day but they could win the World Cup whereas we couldn't"

Solid words from a semi-solid defender.

Strong chance or not, the big boys of European football will all be there- the likes of Spain, Portugal, Italy and most of all France, will pose a huge obstacle to northern European teams in this world cup. With the possible exception of Sweden.

And let's not forget Argentina- the pool of talent they have is astonishing.
