This is probally the work place to say this, Mods feel free to move it to the appropriate place.

I'm a long time skydigital viewer. Always thought it was fantastic and i still do...However i have to live in france for the next couple of weeks as i'm here on business

Where we are staying we have ADSL from a french provided called free. But this is no ordinary ADSL Servive, We have 20mbit download speed and 1mbit upload speed, no download cap, VO-IP Telephone Services. And to top it off they give us about 100 tv channels, To which most are in french but we have the likes of sky news, cnn,, Cnbc, Bloomberg, etc...Its really cool.

All this is for the small payment of 30 euros per month...

Wouldn't it be good of we could get such a service back home. We pay through the nose for tv, 50 euro a month to sky. 54.95 a month to eircom for broadband thats only 2mbits download and 256kbits up and has a download cap...Oh I've forgotten i've got to pay my line rental on top of that.... And vo-ip is not available as a home phone service (someone Correct me if i'm wrong)

I'm beginning to think ireland is a bit of a rip off. Any Comments????

The new owners of NTL are promising exactly this sort of thing...we'll belive it when we see it.

France is all operating on ADSL 2 though. And due to competition, prices are really low. EirCon can't even manage 1mbps over ADSL 1 here in this country - we are being ripped off through and through. To be totally honest, I hope UPC are true to their word, invest a load of cash into the network, bring in massive broadband speed at low cost, launch a telephone service and shred eircom to bits.

How long have they owned chorus for? Or are Morgan Stanley holding it for them?
Have they invested much in Chorus yet?

An upstarting company in London called Homechoice has much the same as that. Its pretty much on-demand tv and as far as I know it doesn't have any ads on it.

NTL in England is also toying with the idea of on-demand tv. They may have already rolled it out.

My 2Mbit/s Eircom ADSL connection must be a figment of my imagination then :)

I'm a HomeChoice subscriber. I mostly use it for Broadband, but our landline telephone calls are routed through them too and they also provide a whole lot of TV channels like the BBCs, ITVs, Channel 4 and Sky Sports through their set top box.

The picture quality has improved recently but it still isn't as good as either Sky or Freeview.

On top of the TV channels they also provide a movies on demand service and we do use this regularly.

I take it then that you get 2megabit non-stop without any problems whatsoever? And do you get it for less than €30?

(In France - you can get AOL 8mb - YES 8 MEGABIT - for €45)

Nothing too special there I must say

At home I get a better service than that for less the cost

    I get a 9Mbit/s down \ 1Mbit/s up connection for €40 a month with excelent latency

I'm not even living in a city

Sooner or later we should have the same quality broadand as the rest of europe is getting
i just takes time thats all

UPC is a pretty reputable company, and their internet service is called chello. They're offering 40MB each-way connections here in Holland at the moment, for around 50/month. Don't know if they'll we willing or able to offer the same in Ireland.

Check how long the frogs have BB, and how long us paddies have had BB. Big difference, huh?

Its not really a valid reason for us being ripped off, though - just an excuse.

And by the looks of it, UPC is set to merge NTL & Chorus into one company - hopefully we will see some really progress with both companies and that they invest a good bit in the companies to upgrade systems to provide decent selection / broadcast quality.
