I've recently moved to New Zealand and I'm thinking if buying a digital Camara. The price locally here is 1600NZD and getting it shipped from the USA by Amazon.com is 1190NZD i.e 25% cheaper.

Will I get hit for VAT or some other import type taxes? I've brought in books and CD's before from Amazon.com into Ireland and never had to pay anything on the import but never electronic goods. I've also recieved books from Amazon from other people as presents in New Zealand and did not have to pay anything on the books coming into the country.

Ps. The NZ dollar is getting stronger and the depost rates here are very good...so anyone thinking of investing might be worth a look. However like Ireland its an island and some things can be expensive

If you are in New Zealand, the rules about VAT may differ. But I know that I shipped many things from the USA to Ireland when I moved here, and got hit with the VAT on the electronic items. I shipped my computer, which was just over six months old, and it was decided by the revenue people that this was a new item. It was held in customs until I contacted them, filled out some forms with an estimated value, and paid about 20% of that estimated value for VAT (on the monitor, hard drive, and accessories). Pretty ridiculous for a used item -- if you consider I already paid to buy it, paid tax on it in USA, paid to have it shipped . . . but in hindsight I realized I should have just bought the computer in Ireland.
So if the rules are the same, you will pay VAT on your digital camera from the USA.

anyone know why electronic goods get vat (or whatever) and not the books when importing from the USA? Also anyone know how 'portable' canon warrenties are?
