If a married woman takes her husband's surname for general purposes, but uses her own for professional reasons do both names have a legal standing? I've heard of women in the UK who have their new surname on their passport but have; "also known as (original name)" added to it.

What do other people think of this and the whole name changing thing on principle?

If you get a PHD and get married afterwards you can't be Dr Husbands Name (Or Wifes name depending on what ya do). So I'd imagine there is some sort of procedure in place :)
