I need to get a gui card cheaply, I've heard about joining courses in the west for €150-200 and they'll accept 3 scorecards from any clubs. However I've been told today by the www.gui.ie that you must play the course you join with an existing member 3 times !!. I live in Bray and work in Dublin, I don't have the time to travel accross the country. So I'm looking for a course within an hour of where north wicklow/south dublin that's not too expense (max400).

    Help & advice appreciated

It's a bit further than an hour but Elmgreen in Castleknock (just off M50) do annual membership (calendar basis) for €395 and you can get your GUI that way. Yes, you must play with a member. Them the rulez!
I joined myself last month and am on my way to the card. But I'm lucky, it's only five minutes away.

Thanks for that, just on to them and this years quota is full, will have to wait till next year. However the guy on the phone suggested corballis in donnabate. They offer the same deal, a bit further to travel but bearable.
    Thanks

You can join courses in Wicklow for around €5,000 these days.

Citywest golf club offer a package for €400, which includes your gui card and reduced green fees on their lakes course. For only €750 you get unlimited golf on the same course

Citywest maybe easier for you to travel to aswell

Like the OP also thinking of joining a GUI club in the new year, preferably in the south dublin/wicklow area too to avoid having to travel through the city centre.
Anyone know anything about a course near Brittas, was out cycling a few weeks back and there was a big sign up for 2010 membership for 499 I think it was, maybe it's not a GUI course.
The Dublin Mountains advertised membership for 399 a few months back but on reading the small print it was only for the remainder of 2009. Think their full yearly membership is more like 799
Surely clubs in and around South Dublin must be struggling, courses down the country are offering great deals on membership.

It wasn't Hazel Grove was it? Just to point out by the way, the thread you're quoting from is four years old so the prices/details mentioned previously will likely be well out of date.

Lol thanks, never even noticed the date, it came up in a relevant search. Even for back then in the height of the boom the courses listed are still comparable in terms of membership. Corballis, Elmgreen, Citywest and Siloage seem to be the cheapest in the greater dublin area from what I can see on the GUI site.
No idea if the course I saw was Hazel Grove, think it was on the Bohernabreena Road just on the Dublin side of Brittas, further in towards Dublin I came across the back of the Dublin Mountains course I think.

In wicklow I suggest contacting these clubs : Arklow Full membership €1500 pa, Druids Heath €1500 pa, Glenmalure ( dont like it ) €640, Macreddin €1500 pa just gone into liquidation, Delgany €1365 pa , Baltinglass nice track €750 pa really good value in my opinion, and pick of the bunch for me Tulfarris €1000 pa.

Or look long term and the likes of my home course is very cheap €3k signing on and €550 sub per annum, will accept the initial fee and sub on direct debit over 10 months so not to sting as bad

Thanks Buachaill, plenty of food for thought there. Will have to try playing a few on trial around Dec time to see what they're like and choose the best in terms of price, convenience, facilities etc.
