    Kop Talk News

29th August 2001: Dudek to undergo medical after Liverpool and Feyenoord agree transfer fee

Jerzy Dudek's agent Jan de Zeeuw has revealed that Liverpool and Feyenoord have agreed a deal that should see the 'keeper make a switch to Anfield before Friday's Champions League transfer deadline.

"As far as I know the agreement was reached during the night and now we only need confirmation of it," said de Zeeuw. "I think that it is just a question of hours."

Asked if Feyenoord had lowered their £6.7million asking fee, de Zeeuw replied: "I can't reveal that at the moment. We have to wait for an official statement from Liverpool."

About time as far as I'm concerned. Westerveld played excellently last season but is prone to make costly blunders, at least now if he hits a slump in form there is an alternative to Pegguy Arphexad. This guy Dudek looks promising, Polish National keeper who came close to signing for the **** ( Arsenal - hehe I can't believe they censored 4rse) last season but Feyenoord upped the asking price.

    C'mon the 'Pool!!

And then in a moment of absolute clarity he realised that there was nothing, not because everything had ceased to exist but rather that it had never been there to begin with.

The desicion to now start to look for a new goalie baffles, annoys & infuriates me.

Houilier acknowledged over a year ago he was chasing Edwin Van de Saar & did nothing about it. Then Fulham come in & get for a bargain price of £7m.

If Houilier didnt think Westerveld was good enough, he didnt need to wait to the start of the season to then make up his bloody mind when in essence its more difficult to make transfers. (ie. most of the "cream" are taken & tight transfer windows etc.)

The big question will be as well...Will it all go through before the Champ Lge deadline?? Hopefully.

The other thing which is sometimes overlooked is that teams need time to gel and develop an understanding- ie betw, GK & the back 4. This move now could jeopardise the "relative" cohesion we have.

The timing etc. just baffles me. I think Westerveld is a good keeper. Mistakes will always be made but overall he has been a consitent performer & of course how quickly we forget a Man of the match performance vs. Man U.??

Westerveld is a good keeper, not so hot on crosses perhaps but he is a good shot stopper. It seems to be a bit panicy to try and get another keeper just because he's hit a bit of a bad patch in form at the moment - I don't know anything about Jerzy Dudek so I can't say if he's better or what.

"Dudek to join the Liverpool assault on Europe

Liverpool have dramatically clinched the £4.9m signing of Jerzy Dudek from Feyenoord - the transfer Gerard Houllier believes makes his team potential Champions League winners.

After a day of haggling with the perennially frustrating chairman of the Rotterdam club, Jorien van den Herik, the fee was agreed and the Anfield club doctor will fly to Warsaw today to conduct a medical so the goalkeeper can be registered in time for tomorrow night's UEFA signing deadline.

Dudek's desire to join Liverpool was such that he even waived his rights to a substantial pay- off to finalise the move. His agent Jan de Zeeuw said: 'Jerzy has made a big sacrifice of around £300,000 to make sure it goes through. That shows his desire to become a Liverpool player.'

The news will come as a huge and embarrassing blow to Sander Westerveld, currently on international duty with Holland, who proclaimed on Monday that Houllier had promised not to sign a new keeper."

Now it is expected that Liverpool will sell a crestfallen Westerveld to Ajax.

What the fu(k, I think houllier is turning into alex ferg....

I think that this move has less to do with Westerveld's mistake in the Bolton game than it does with there actually being some quality competition for the keeper's position. Every other player on the pitch knows that a run of bad form can lose them their place on the first team such is the strength of the Liverpool squad, so why should this not be the case for the keeper? I honestly don't think that Houllier will sell Westerveld, he is trying to build a Champion's League winning squad, add the fact that he was given £20m in the summer to strengthen the squad, I don't think he will be selling anyone a while.

Unfortunately I think Fowler may be sold unless theres a radical turnaround on numerous fronts.

What about a swap for Steve McManaman??

We could do w/ his trckery on the left side.
Interesting Thought !! Only really thought about it after hearing yet another quote from Stevie Mac, along the lines of " I want to play back in the Prem."

We've just got Dudek and Kirkland smile.gif

I hadn't heard of Dudek before this week, but he was supposed to be going to Arsenal in the summer (instead of Wright) so he must be fairly decent. Kirkland is a real class keeper, better than Westerveld I'd say.

    Bye bye Sander then.

Yeah Westerweld had a big smile on face when when they showed him on the telly. Poor old Dudek looked like he wanted to break into tears after that game :)
