I Have just moved back to ireland from the uk and bought a house with my partner of 5 yrs (2ys living together) and rang to ask if i could claim his tax credits as he is not working at the moment and im paying a lot of tax.

I was told i could'nt claim this as were not married and that common law partner does'nt exsist over her is this correct???

believe it or not, 'common law' is not officially law anywhere.
while a lot of people say it, it actually means nothing in the eyes of the law.

common law also does not exist in UK.

The Dutch actually have a Samen Wonen / Living Together category that basically entitles you to the same rightsas married couples. That way gay & lesbian couples have the same status as everybody else.
