Seems like a pretty good price to me for that level of specs in a laptop. :)

Hmm, a lot of these about, check out jes.de's laptops (notebook section).
    Fair bit cheaper than that..

Can't find any heads up between Mobility X700 and Geforce Go6600, any notions which'd come out on top?
    Desktop parts seem pretty even.

I can't see this Laptop on the list there or one with the same spec.
Which one were you talking about?

    hmmm, take your pick man:
All real brands (well, Acer), means drivers, all cheaper, and if you're not fussed about the 128MB Gfx, then there are half a dozen more just like it.

I've had a look at the Aldi one.. it is pretty impressive alright..
Screen res isn't great for a 15.4", and it's not pretty, but the specs are rock solid, name components n' all.
Now, who wants a Sony Vaio V505, for, say, €1499?

I don't think any of these are the same spec they are all below the ALDI one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

the aldi one looks v good. thinking of getting it.

do you reckon a laptop holds its value longer than a pc, say you wanted to offload it in a year or 2.

    i reckon so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 400 ✭✭ClonmelMan

Yes they do but don't forget that we are near a 64bit CPU as a standard setup ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭case_sensitive

Kinda.. I did post a link to a Turion 64-based Acer, but unless you need to address colossal amounts of RAM or need to calculate Pi to a zillion digits in one cycle, 64-bit processing doesn't offer much. The reason Athlon 64s are faster at 32-bit operations is because they double the number of registers on the proc. Still half the number Mac G5s have though.
In short, wouldn't be too fussed about 64 bit if you're recycling your computer more often than every two years, Longhorn won't be out until late 2006 if not 2007, and most stuff will work on 32 bit Windows until at least early 2008 me'dsay.

Sounds good! I'm planning on getting a laptop and have been watching the Dell outlet. I know very little about computer specs but since my desktop is a P3 500 I think it's time to upgrade and a laptop would be a better investment for a student. So would you suggest this to someone like myself who would use it not only for college but also to play games like Half Life 2, one of the other reasons for upgrading. :)

And how do you get them? Do you have to order off them and pay up front or do they have them instore? Are they limited?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

You go into the shop bright and early Thursday morning and either pay cash up front or by laser card. They don't take cheques or credit cards.
    Stock usually is limited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭Akula

anybody know what the gericom external hard drives are like?

Do they need a separate power supply or do they draw it through the usb 2 interface.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

Since theres no 2.5" (laptop) drives over 120GB this is a 3.5" (desktop) drive.

All 3.5" drives need external power. Only 2.5" drives are bus powered.

    So this definately needs power.

Don't lappy HDs over 80Gb also need external power(or at least an extra USB cable)?

I think it says the monitors have a refresh rate of 20ms. Not knowing much about such things, is this a good rate??

    dearg_doom wrote:

It depends on the drive spec. and also how good the USB ports are. Not all of them are powered and not all of them deliver enough power. Some drives over 20GB need more power and some 80GB's don't. Usually you can use a 2nd USB port or PS/2 port or even a AC power with them.

A decent Y USB cable is usually enough.

Probably too late to make a difference but 20ms refresh rate is so so. If you'll be doing alot of heavy gaming like battle field or half-life 2 then you would probably want to be lookig more along the lines of 13-10ms. but if its general purpose use then its sound as a pound

Hi, was anyone there this morning? Was there plenty of the wireless optical mice there? I want to get one but didn't fancy going at sunrise, hopefully I wont be disappointed. Oh, I'll probably be going to Tallaght. I'm assuming the Parnell St. Store would be the quickest to sell out of everything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Picked one of the laptops up in Carlow this morning - lovely piece of kit indeed. The 19" monitors were flying out of the place, along with the hard drives. One of my friends picked up the wireless router/modem, pretty stylish looking.

I got up out of bed after 2 hours sleep and with a bad hangover to drive to Clonmell then onto Carlow and and got back to Waterford without the damm hard drive. Why don’t they get enough of them in to go around

Can you get the router working? I'm having problems getting it going

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

I'm having a nightmare trying to start it up. I get to the screen to check IP addresses, and then nothing. I've tried countless attempts to get it running, I switched back to my normal modem. I think I'll try again in the morning. The router will verify that it has the signal but the IP address says 0.0.0.0 which is annoying.

I got the laptop and mouse yesterday. I didn't get the wireless router as I thought someone told me you can get them for 60/70 euro. Are they good value. I know nothing about them only that I do need one for round the house surfin'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

Well if you ever come across one for €60/€70 let me know. It's hard enough to find a wireless/PSTN modem router as it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭johnniekipper

Does anyone know if they are still for sale at the tallagh store ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Most wireless routers for €60 or €70 will not have the modem built in - you would need an external dsl/cable modem with an ethernet interface to connect to them.

I think they were around 110. I might just switch to Eircom from Esat for 6 months because they give a wireless modem.
