I'm going to New York in September. I want to save some money spending money.

Options as I see it -

Buy some dollars now. That way I can't spend the money before going.

Get some travellers cheques. I'm not really sure what the buzz is with these but would be safer than cash.

Just save money and use my credit card when i get over there.

    any suggestions?

    Hi Podgeen,

Just put the money into your credit card...... best of all you can use your normal bank card in the ATM's over there ... just check that it has the Cirrus symbol on the card.
If it doesn't just ask your bank for one.

I wouldn't bother with Travellers Cheques in this day and age.

Buying Dollars now means you are speculating on price ... you might win, you might lose, who knows.

yeah put it on your credit card, very hand. the charges arent as ridicolous for using your credit card as they are for using your bank card.

Have both cash and a credit card................no one uses travellers cheques really anymore.........have the cash if you're buying from the drink and pretzel stands in NY and for small cafe's etc

My advice to original poster also.

banks don't even recommend travellers cheques in this day and age.... seems to be a thing of the pass.

Put a pile of money into your cradit card account and work off that, also bring a few hundred in cash just to have for the subway, and buying snacks, etc.

Have a great time. NYC is great.
