its based on airtime, rather than on sales like the UK top 30.

Which is a much better way of telling popularity of songs than singles sales alone. How many people buy singles? And what about popular songs which arent released as singles?

Airplay wouldnt really work in Ireland, since most the radio stations(In dublin anyway) seem to base their playlists on the singles charts.

singles charts are open to abuse too, in ireland with a small population, a few hundred sales make all the difference sometimes between rankings......
