    Hey all,

Looking for some bit of assistance here. Maybe someone can offer some, or have had this problem before. Basicaly, something is preventing the Internet from fully working when Windows XP Sp2 is in normal mode. When I boot up normaly, ICQ and MSN Messenger sign in OK, but I can not communicate with anyone, view any websites etc etc.

My computer is on a mini wireless network - the main PC with the net works grand, this PC stopped working suddenly with no reason (was after a re-boot). I ran Microsofts Spyware scanner in safe mode and normal mode - came up a browser hijack which it removed, now after several more scans nothing comes up.

Ran AVG, found a few trojans and other viruses espcially in the Java Cache (which I have now cleared). Deleted them all (after moving to vault). Ran AVG again, not reporting anything. Both programs are uptodate. I ran HiJack this, the log file stated this (see attachment).

Not familar with hijack this, but it seems most of them I am aware of and are not any harm to my PC? Perhaps you have spotted something in the above which may be my problem.

I plan to run Ad-Aware and Spybot now both in Safe Mode and Normal mode and see the results.

What could be the cause of this annoying problem? Internet works in safe mode, not in normal mode. I thought it was the network issue but I can confirm it works perfect as I can access the other PC, they can print and send requests to me etc etc. and also, I moved the modem to this PC and connected to the net and the internet still didnt work fully.

To sum up: Internet wont work on this PC unless in Safe Mode, on normal mode ICQ and MSN connect but communication is a no-no and FireFox/IE is not able to load a webpage or news feeds. Connecting the modem to this PC also has the same issue. PC's on Network which works fully. Ran several Virus / Spyware scans and cleaned PC now all is OK in that department. HiJack this log above.

Any other suggestions? Im lost at the present moment as you probably can tell.

    Cheers :D

    - Sully

I'm not sure but maybe one of the files for internet browsing was damaged my the viruses. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the network. Also maybe reinstalling IE may help solve the problem. I'm not sure fully but it's worth trying.

If that was the case :
    A) Why would it work in Safe Mode?
    B) Its not a network issue, its an internal issue. I tried with the internet running of this PC and it still didnt work.

FireFox doesnt work either, which is my primary browser so re-installing IE wont benefit.

Also, I notice the fan is constantly going and is loud. Here is my CPU's clock speed if it makes a difference: 3058.9 Mhz.

The viruses you had have already caused the damage if you got the names of them there could be fixes on the web. You'd prob just be quicker throw on a fresh OS.

stupid question: did you disable windows firewall?
are DNS entries in your network config correct?

    maybe this will help you?

could well be winsock buggered by the spyware. i used to have to fix it manually (looking after 1500 PC's and getting it on an almost weekly basis) by ripping out winsock and it's related stuff, but have it happening often enough that i keep a tool handy to reset it.

PM me your email address and I can email it to you.

Hrm right well I did a Spybot and Ad-Aware scan both in normal and safe mode, found lots of crap but all is clean and it still doesnt work.

I really do not understand why it works in Safe Mode but not in normal mode.

    Vibe: Will do, thanks!

That happened to me when I installed the wrong modem driver, my CPU fan went up to full speed.

I dunno, sounds weird, though usually connectivity problems can be ironed out reinstalled tcp/ip in the network connection, or just as good, wipe the lot off, and reinstall em and start fresh.

at least doing this will eliminate 1 possiblity and it only takes a few minutes

I would go with the previous post to.

Remove all network protcols. Uninstall network card or modems from device manager and reboot.

Windows should reinstall most things automatically after the reboot.

Also run a registry cleaner like tuneyp utilities to fix any reg entries that are still there.

So I should be removing the following:

    Client for MS Networks
    File and Printer Sharing
    QoS Packet Sharing and
    TCP IP Internet Protocol/

There all I have for me one Network Connection on this pc. My network adapter is Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

I hope windows will re-install em cause iv no disks for it. Not even sure if I have my XP Disk :O

Reg Cleaner I cant imagine fixing it but I may run it.

Try to find out whats putting the cpu under pressure. Look at the running processes in Windows task manager and you should be able to see if theres one using a lot of CPU. If so then this could be the bitch thats causing the problem.

can you even ping outside of your network to start off with??

Have you checked the event logs to see if networking services fail to start up?

Other pc's in your network do they have this problem is it just the one with the problem?

OK I looked at the processor list, and noticed my CPU was at full blast 100% and the list kept updating so it was hard to spot what was causing the problems! Can anyone recommend a decent processor scan to see if any are bad / causing problems etc? One thing I did notice most programs jumping from 40% - 80% with particular the svchost which often went to 100% (runing several times this process is) and another weird file called msiexe.exe. Looking at my processor list, the list jumps here and there.

I didnt uninstall any of the protocols etc as suggested as I dont see how they are faulty when its not a network issue and doesnt seem connected with my problem.

Im a broadband user in case that helps but doubtfull! Also, didnt try pinging will do asap and also, its only this PC on a 2 PC network with the problem. It was a sudden occurance which I can not find the cause or even a possible cause.

Hope that info helped -- thanks for your kind continuing assistance. Also, sorry its taking so long for me to respond, I have very limited time at the moment!

Nope - just tried pinging gmail. Got this error:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin>ping gmail.com
Ping request could not find host gmail.com. Please check the name and try again.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin>

Also, where are the event logs for windows? Hrm.
