I know the make is always very important when it comes to power supplies, but what sort of wattage should I be looking for on the following system:

    Socket 939 Mobo
    AMD 64 3000+
    1GB RAM
    2 x SATA drives
    6600GT PCI express
    DVD writer

At athe moment im going with a 400W Fortron PSU. Does this sound ok?

Doesn't sound too bad but usually it would say in the maual you get what the recommended PSU wattage is. 400 seems fine to me unless it says differently in the Mobo Manual.

As infini said 400w ish would be right but if you want to check - google for a calculator example there are loads

i got a 400w fortron before and i have about the same amount of pc spec as u do and it started making noises like sqewking sound because it was working so hard its bearings went so i suggest getting a higher watt then what u think u need ! ;)

friend has similar spec running on a 350w hiper psu. Runs fine.

Not everything depends on the Wattage ... Amps on the 12V rail are VERY important, If u go for a 400watt PSU ... Best to get around 20A on 12V Rail to be on the safe and stable side.

Or if u are a bit on the wild style...Check this Mad PSU out.

    ITs got 4 x 12V rails. ( 17A each ) so thats a 68A 12V PSu... Thats enough to power 3 Average PC's stabily.

I have same as you kazzer but with 4 HDD's.

My fortron400W works perfectly and I have the fan set to just below any high noise generation(about half way) with no problems.

Fortron's 400W is a quality product and its 400W is more than enough so dont waste your money on anything of a higher wattage.

Wattage isent every thing I had a 1 gig P3 that ran off a 90W with 2 HD`s and 2 DVD drives fine.
That said I like to go for 450 W supplies or higher. I install a lot of HD`s.

I hope it's not highjacking the thread to ask a slight variation of the same question:

I'm looking at putting together the same spec except for a 3200+ (or a 3500+ if the budget will stretch) and an X800XL 256MB.

I've read great things about the Antec Sonata case. But would the 380 Watt TruePower power supply be enough?

Yeah beaker, if it's an antec on then your fine.

Have that case and psu, works fine for me but changed it to a Ocz520watt which i had lying around in my bedroom , As I was thinking the Ocz psu would give me a better oc but it did not.

    Ran 4 hdd's
    video card
    wireless pci card
    56k modem
    sound card
cpu clocked to what it says in sig
    1 120mm fan and a 92mm cpu fan.

I have read and heard that Fortron PSU say they produce 400w but infact produce more then they state. So thats a good thing.

If I buy this PSU, what cables will I need to get for it considering I will have a SATA drive two IDE optical drives, and PCI-e graphics card?

Could someone please explain what wiring I need.

    Your help is really appreciated!

What mobo do you have. Just check the 20-24pin connection first. The PSU is 24.

Just go to the MSI website and check?

If your buying a 400w for an SLi mobo i presume you want to lump another 6600gt in there later on. Think ahead, i dont thint that PSU will run 2*6600gts and all your bits
