    Hey all! :D
I couldn't sleep last night and I got to thinking about smells....
Anyway,as we all probably know,a smell is the most powerful memory trigger.
Sometimes I can even manifest a smell in my mind and smell it even though it's not really there, just by thinking about what I associate it with.

For example, every time I smell any kind of lynx I'm suddenly watching my ex getting ready to go out. Or when I smell cold denim it reminds me of being about 4 and hugging my mom at the door, just after she'd come home from work.

Anyway, that's all a bit soppy I suppose but I just wondered what smells remind you of certain people or transport you back to a signifigant or even insignifigant point in your life?

Certain aftershaves remind me of certain travels and times in my life if I switch back to using them. Certain perfumes remind me of past GF's but not in a bad way (except one, maybe). Smell is the one sense that can change our moods in a huge way I think.

if I smell sh1t I remember being on the bog... probably because that is where I am to smell it

It's funny,I can actually smell my first kiss.
Dunno what the smell is but it comes to me every now and again!

it's funny how even bad smells can bring up good memories. The smell of fumes from wood stain and varnish give me a headache, but they remind me of hanging around my father's woodworking shop when i was little.

Well perfumes are the strongest reminder for me, but whenever I smell fresh baked cakes or stuff it reminds me of pancake day (I luv pancakes).

I get this weird smell sometimes, and it reminds me of whenever I go to Canada! Can't for the life of me explain what the smell smells like, only that sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.
Also, whenever I smell money (notes) or that Calvin Klein aftrershave that was being given out on Grafton St. eons ago, it brings me back to when I used to spraypaint.

    Weird, I know.

I also can remember my first kiss ala snog by smell, the smell of fanta as it was a fanta bottle we used for our tweeny game of "spin the bottle" ah primary school the chaos we used to cause !! :D

    Regards netwhizkid

when I was about two I was out for a walk near where we lived (presumably under supervision but I cann't remember it) I approached this guy who was putting a window in/up and he gave me some putty to play with. Then he showed me how to put a window in.

Ever since whenever I smell putty (or linseed) it comes flooding back. The smell is the only real memory. I'm not sure if the imagery I have is concocted or real. But the smell...

Perfumes would definitely remind me of some women I'm close to. the smell of a fresh baked apple tart reminds me of my Mum cooking in the kitchen when I was a small kid.

Can't say that I have the ability to bring a smell to mind at any time though...

Sometimes I get this smell on warm summer days that reminds me of when I was in America as a child.

Certain smells remind me of certain girls from years ago, a wave of memories come flooding back with just one whiff which is weird.

I would not like to be you. Or your significant other for that matter.

Funny how a lot of girls responded to this one. Being chicks, your sense of smell is much greater than a male's, and you are programmed to act on scents rather than sense. QED.

No no, he was right actually. It's Larch Hill. Up in the Dublin/Wicklow mountains. Used to go up there when I was a kid. Deadly place!

My mom has a very distinct perfumy/make-up smell that's on all her clothes too. Reminds me of when she used to hug me when I was young. (Not that she doesn't occasionally do it now. Just triggers memories of my youth.)

The smell of the sea always reminds me of going sailing with my dad as a kid. I like that one.
