abuse proof laptop

I've had a search through the forum without much luck so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions; I need to find a laptop that's as close as possible building site proof, or possibly some kind of protective shell to fit an existing make. As well as the obvious gravity induced knocks/general abuse the main problem is the amount of dust around which has a habit of collecting in any and every drive/port/keyboard etc.

Any suggestions or experience of such a laptop would be much apreciated, cheers.

agreed. have supplied them to the airport police for mobile personell verification. they are ip rated (waterproof) so dust shouldnt be a problem and can be dropped from 20 feet (tho we were afraid to try that one) thats the closest to abuse proof you will get

Seen ones like it in singapore... all ports are sealable & watertight... demo video of someone burying it in mud was rather entertaining...

For dropproof, try the IBM T41/T42/T43 machines. These have a built in motion detector which parks the heads on the hard drive when is detects a sudden acceleration (ie before the shock). This means that even if the laptop is smashed, the hard drive is protected.
I tripped over a power cable + dragged one belonging to a colleague onto a concrete floor recently + it was perfect.

Those toughbooks are great - we had one on trial in work last summer.
