hey I have to pay for some exams and make my payment in sterling , I dont own a credit card Im wondering whats the story with a british bank draft because it says on the form payments may be made by draft drawn on a uk bank , does this mean I need a british bank account , and if i need to get a british postal order , can i get one in the bank , im very confused.

its for 410 sterling , it says I can pay by cheque /draft or british postal order , and that no other method can be accepted , is a money order the same as a postal order?

Any bank'll sort you out - if you go to say, Bank of Ireland and get the draft, it'll say £410stg and be made payable to whoever, but it'll also have the logo of, I think, Barclays bank, so it's 'drawn' on a UK bank. You could ring around the banks for the best quote on how much they'll charge you, but I've a notion that it's more of a muchness - you'll get screwed either way.

Having tried to do this the other way around - pay Euro from a UK bank, they might insist that you have an account there before they help you...some kinda money laundering regulations mallarkey...

I see spar and ptsb have a new scheme going where you can buy a once off credit card voucher for internet shoping. There is no credit checks etc and you can get the voucher straight away ( you just hand over the cash). I do not know what the charges are but it might be cheaper.

I've gotten drafts before in the B of I branch here in UCC, and there's no commission as a student.

    Can you try that?

I have a graduate Account , would that help me skip the charges ?Maybe I could get the bf to do it , he has a student account with AIB.
Wow those spar vouchers sound handy.

just go into where you have your account and ask for a Sterling Bank Draft payable to whoever

This will be drawn on a UK Bank which is exactly what they are looking for.

Cost = Stg amount divided by bank's sell stg cheque rate plus commission charge (usually €4 or €5. €3.81 in UB)

so if the draft is GBP£410 and the rate is 0.67 (FOR EXAMPLE) then you owe the bank €611.94 plus the commision charge

    Is this in operation already?

I think Irish banks now require you to have an account with them before they'll give you a Sterling Bank Draft. In fact you cannot even pay for it in cash if I remember right. The amount is taken from your account. This is what happens with Ulster Bank at least.

    that is correct for UB.
