Way back in the very old days the high elves had very little specail rules. and only four charcteres. teclis tyrion imirk and eletahrion. there was no speacil rule for sowrd masters,white lions,shadow warriors,or phoenix guard. but deffently they always were and always will be the best. but kinda hard to use unless u use them right.

If you want old, have you ever seen the Realm of Chaos books (Slaves to Darkness, and The Lost and the Damned) ?

The rules they had for Chaos armies were a lot of fun, but totally insane. I still remember my Lord of Khorne on a griffon .. with a MULTI MELTA. This was back when the MM had a 3" blast. With his BS9, he was annihilating units in a single shot.
