Yes that's right folks, another custom job ;)

I've been thinking about having a custom guitar for a while now, approx 6hrs to be honest :p and i keep thinking it would be damn DAMN cool!!!!

I'm thinking of going with www.warmoth.com, can anyone tell me if they put the thing together or do they only provide the parts?

Here we go: this is what i've put together so far, so it'll all probably change soon enough. :D

    BODY

VIP Carved top body, Mahogany back with quilted maple top. Possible binding.

    NECK

Warmoth "Pro" 13° with clear satin finish, back contour/fret sizes etc are still to be decided

    PICKUPS

Seymour Duncan - SH-2 JazzTM Model - NECK

    SH-2.jpg

Seymour Duncan - SH-4 JBTM Model – BRIDGE

    SH-4JB.blk.jpg

I like the sound of these, VERY nice indeed.

    HARDWARE

Bridge - Still to be decided, don't know whether to go for fixed bridge or tremolo. What to do?

Tuners - Schaller Mini Locking Tuners

    http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/tuners/tuners.cfm?fuseaction=guitar_tuners

    PAINT

DYED - Amber/Purple or Emerald etc

    http://www.warmoth.com/paint/paint.cfm?fuseaction=dyed

    POSSIBLE OUTCOME?

Ok i know it's very PRS'esque, but lets face it, imo they're the sexiest guitars on the planet!! :D

At the moment it's likelt to cost less than $1500, i use the word 'likely' loosely! Plus delivery and customs tax etc. So i'm hoping to keep it around the 1500 euro mark.

    What dya's reckon?

You have to put it together yourself. Kinda like a cool mechano set :p

I really only recommend doing something like that if you have at least basic guitar tech skills (ie being able to install pickups, do a complete set up on a guitar, etc)

god damn it, i guess i'll have to practise on me epi so. Or just pay some guy to do it for me properly! It's only the pickups i'd have to worry about isnt it? The neck and body shouldn't give too much trouble would it? I think i could handle that.

    what dya reckon anyway?

Assuming you don't have to drill any holes for anything, it's just a case of screws things on. Warmoth finish the body and the neck.

Wouldn't mind one of these tbh:

na no drilling involved afaik, plus i think everything is provided suck as screws etc

Ah, sure give it a go. Nothing to loose really. Personally, I don't think I'd like a Warmoth guitar. I hate heels!

A bolt on neck on a PRS type guitar just isnt right imo. It won't have the same long sustain as a set neck.

Unless the neck and joint were well made. You'll get almost the same amount of sustain if the neck is tight in the pocket.

feylya what's the catch with that only being $180?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Low quality hardware, veneer top, not painted. There's about €50 worth of hardware and wood in it. The body and neck are made on CNC machines. They're not great guitars but they can be made into a fairly decent instrument.

i thought veneer meant when the headstock is the same colour as the rest of the body, what does it mean in this case? What would you do replace the electronics?

Warmoth don't finish frets afaik. When you get then neck you'll have to get a luthier to level and dress them.

    you sure?

Whats you're opinion Doc, could i improve on anything? obviously i'd want the best guitar i can afford

That's the paint/varnish finish. What I mean is that they put the frets in, but they don't level and dress them... or at least they never used to.

TBH for that sort of money you could comfortably afford a second hand PRS, Les Paul or Patrick Eggle etc. I know that's what I'd go for.

Doc is exactly right, go on to ebay or chris guitar's and you can get the near perfect genuine article second-hand, alot less hassle alot more satiasfaction.
