Hope this is in the right forum.

The kids played a game called Casino Empire on their own PC which would freeze every time it was played. After contacting the manufacturers I was advised to log onto the Samsung site and download an upgrade for the DVD-Rom.

I did this and downloaded a Bin file(20030919144343187_SM-332B_COM-T406) and a file named sfdwin.exe to my own PC as it has internet access. I copied the downloaded stuff to disk and attempted to install it on the other PC. During that procedure I was given the option of removing an old file which I did (thinking this was the right thing to do).

Now the DVD-Rom will not work. Even the shortcut icon has a question mark shown on it. When the PC is booted up there is a message saying that the “Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found” and “Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility”

The CD/DVD-Rom is made by Samsung. On clicking the properties I got this - ST 380023A (probably the hard drive) and “AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI cdRom device” The OS is Windows XP

Can you help please as I know very little computers

Just do a google for 'sfdwin.exe'. I came across this comment from a discussion forum...

"Do not use the proprietory flashing utility from Samsung. You can never flash the patched RPC-1 using that. Use MtkWINFlash to patch your SM-348B.

I use it all the time Smile Just make sure you read ALL the instructions BEFORE you proceed with the flash.

STOP using SFDWIN.EXE it could kill your drive "

Can you do a system restore from a point before you ran the util?

    Thanks for the reply degsie.

    I found old literature and the DVD/CD-RoM is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-332B

In the short term is it safe to use the PC or should I delete the sfdwin.exe
file and any ideas as to what to do at start up. Should I press F1 or F2

if I delete the .exe file will the PC boot up as normal. As per my earlier post I have to press F1 to continue with the boot up but then it takes several minutes as opposed to about 40 seconds beforehand

flashing a drive incorrectly can destroy it.

can you disconnect the dvd drive from the motherboard to see if it boots fine that way?
the pc could be booting slowly as its trying to fidure out what the dvd drive is over and over.
a replacement dvd-rom cshould cost you about a tenner ,

I,m not over familiar with PC's so my son has taken it to a friend of his today who is supposed to be a bit of a whizz kid with these things.

Hopefully he will sort it for me but I will post again when I get it back
