Is there going to be a Lord of the rings real time strategy released using the Total War engine.

I would very much doubt it, EA have the lisence for LOTR games, and I doubt their going to bother using the RTW engine, as they still seem to love the C&C:G engine (which is an unbelievably AWFUL engine, theres 2 more games in the making using it iirc, including RA3), so dont hold your breath unless a MOD team does it or something, and Im not sure how well the RTW engine supports the mod community.

After a bit of snooping around I found this:

Looks like it could end up being quite good :)

It could be class. It is just weird that they don't do the third age instead.

I wouldnt get your hopes up. I can see this being closed down before you can say "cease and desist". The only reason I can imagine its not been closed down yet is because they havent heard about it. Lets face it, EA would be stupid if they go to the bother of liscencing the game and then allowing their profits to be undermined by others work.

I dunno, EA havent been that c*nty about MOD teams using their lisence, I havent heard of any MOD teams shut down by them yet. The big fussy gits are FOX, every AvP orientated MOD I have seen has been shot down with great efficiency.

I think I remember them shutting down some System Shock 2 based mod a while back, it was discussed on the games forum. Every lisence holder will defend their rights when it comes to to stuff like this. Theyd be foolish not to, as when it comes to games like Enter The Matrix and that LOTR RTS thing they released, its only the lisence thats selling the game. And these days, some mod teams are putting out work thats maybe not the quality of a commercial game, but still good enough to make commercial games unprofitable. No one is going to out do Counter Strike in the Realistic weapons DM areana. If they dont defend it consistently, theres a chance it could weaken their case in court at some later point.
