Was a bit pissed about the Aldi DVD, but jes.de are doing the Lite-on LVW-5002 for €149. Postage was €28.
I ordered one just now, so I'll post in hardware forums to let you know how I get on, but I'm very excited!
for the slightly better-heeled, they do the Lite-on recorder with DVR with 160GB hdd for €400 too..
In perspective, Amazon have them at £300 (€430ish).

    Spec of DVD+RW:

    Kinderleichte Bedienung, ansprechendes Design • DVD-Recorder • Aufnahmesystem: DVD+R, DVD+RW • ShowView • VPS • Progressive Scan • Wiedergabeformate: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, Audio-CD, CD-R/-RW, JPEG-CD, MP3-CD

    DVR (160GB):

    Aufnahmeformate:
    • DVD+R / DVD+RW, DVD-R / DVD-RW, CD-R / CD-RW

    Videoaufnahmeformate:
    • MPEG2 : DVD+VR (HQ / SP / LP / EP mode) , SVCD, MPEG1 : DVD+VR (SLP mode) , VCD

    Audioaufnahmeformate:
    • MPEG2 (Dobly Digital 2 channel), MPEG1 (Dobly Digital or MPEG2 Layer 3), CD-DA (44.1KHz)

    Kinderleichte Bedienung, ansprechendes Design • DVD-Recorder • 160GB Festplatte • FireWire/AV-IN • DVD+R/RW,DVD-R/RW,CD-R/RW Aufnahme • DVD/DVD+VR/VCD/SVCD/AudioCD/MP3/JPEG Playback

Mine's pretty decent, any particular part you were wanting translated??
Not translating the whole freaking thing mind you, use
The specs are handy enough, becuase it's mostly model numbers etc.

google Translate makes an OK job of the first para:
CD-r/rw, SVCD, VCD and CD Rome. The equipment offers programmable timers admission in different qualities (HQ, FR, LP, EP) up to 6 hours. The Rekorder had AV input (2x Scart Connection), and on the front side makes the IEEE1394-Input a connection possible with the digital video camera.

And the second bit is alright too:
he Lvw-5045 supplies most modern DVD Recording technology and a high storage volume of 160 GB. The time SHIFT function permits the user to watch during the current admission the at the beginning of the noted film. In addition the new DVD Rekorder orders a ShowView function and a progressive Scan. Beside that 160 GB fixed disks the Lvw-5045 offers an internal DVD Rekorder for DVD+R/+RW and Dvd r rw to media. The user has the possibility of burning or of putting down films later directly from the television receipt on a DVD and of copying according to desire on DVD however only on the hard disk. Owing to High speed Dubbing the Rekorder needs only few minutes for the data communication of the non removable disk on a DVD. For the photograph directly on DVD media depending upon photograph quality one storage capacity between 6 hours in the super Long Play mode and 1 hour are to the user in the High quality mode at the disposal. The inserted non removable disk is enough for the archiving of approximately 33 hours filmmaterial in the High quality Aufnahmemodus and 198 hours in the super Long Play mode. For a maximum of flexibility the DVD drive assembly is laid out as multi-burners: The user can use both DVD+R and r media for the data protection. Also again-recordable media of the type +RW and Rw can be described with the LiteOn DVD non removable disk Rekorder. Particularly to the safety device of shorter film sequences or for the storage of music titles also CD-r and CD RW data media can be used. For video photographs in the SVCD format the capacity of a CD data medium is sufficient for approximately 34 minutes, in the VCD format for 68 minutes. Apart from the data protection function the inserted DVD drive assembly can be used also as adequate DVD Player. The data formats DVD video, DVD+VR, super VCD, video CD as well as audio CD are supported. Besides the Lvw-5045 reads the photo format JPEG and audio files in MP3-Kodierung.

Try to get the 5005 model, it can write to + & - blank dvd's

Yeah, saw that, ship has sort of sailed on that one, but Jes only have those two available, and for €150 I can put up with only +R/RW. Most of my Mac apps can only use the -R/RW, but impending software and new burner should sort that. At the moment I've got a mixture of different DVD?rs.

    5002 model €199, 5005 model € 230, Argos
Got the 5005 and the son made it all regions compatible using the remote ( hidden menu). Info is on the net. lite on 5005 is rebranded Sony, he says

i think its more that sony use liteon drives in their machines, so would probably be more accurate to call the sony a rebranded liteon

Yeah, there's a region free hack for the 5002 too, using the remote, obviously, it not being legal, I'm not going to post it here, but a google search quickly produces results.
Didn't know it was in Argos actually, but I got mine for under €180 inc postage, so I'm not that upset, and my DVDs are all going +R soon.

Does it mention being compatible with PAL I? If from Germany there may be a chance it only supports PAL BG/D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭case_sensitive

According to the manual, it supports just about everything..
    PAL-B/G, PAL-D/K,
    PAL-I, or SECAM-L/L

If I'm reading this right, it'll even record a dolby digital signal to DVD.

Update: Just arrived, checked manual, "PAL-I, or SECAM-L/L" is just a dodgy english translation, the German manual clearly says 'und' (and).
Can't wait to get it unpacked..

These look great my only concern is that I read that these only have mono tuners....not nicam which would be a bit of a pain. The 5006 does have a stereo tuner though, but the reviews for that are pretty crappy...

Spent last night painstakingly playing with this; tuning, moving, then naming channels etc..
Recording quality is brilliant, honestly couldn't see any degradation of quality until the 4 hour setting on a 29" TV, so it's 3 hours per RW :->
Only annoyance is a whiring sound all the time but when the drive is in sleep mode, if sound is up, won't hear it, but if you're recording on mute, it's noticeable. About the same volume as an old VHS, but higher pitched.
I listened to the recorded TV through an optical (TOS) link to a DTS surround system (which, admitted up-mixes stereo signals), and it *definitely* records sound in dolby digital (if available) or 2-channel if it's not. Manual says so.
If you're talking about it having a single tuner rather than dual (record one thing, watch another), then you're right, but it has an RF pass-through, so I just pass the RF to the TV and watch it. For €149, what do you want??

Haven't seen the green hues people were talking about, though the tuning on a few channels isn't perfect (think I'll get NTL out to put a booster on it, worked in my last place, and was free).
Nope, I'm a very satisfied punter.
Now I have to buy the bloody RTE Guide though..

think i'll buy one as well, aint as technical as you case-sensitive, but i think all the scrubs series on dvd will be sweet :)

Do it PaddyC, it's definitely worth it.
Argos have one for €179 (special offer leaflet in store, not as limited quantities as Aldi), there the one I bought on Jes for €178 inc fast delivery from Germany (get english manual off the website, lieder nür deutsche Bedienungsanleitung mitgeliefert :->)

I guy i no bought one of these. when he records using Dvd + r they will only play back in this player and not on others or a PC. when he uses Dvd +RW the will work on anything .Anybody else have this problem or no what hes doing wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

You have to finalize discs for them to play in other player (some may not like any copies, esp. +r). The dvd recorder will have a finalize option, It means you can no longer write to the disc or edit title names etc.
An unfinalised disc should only work in its own player, or similar brand/type
DVD-RW needs finalisation too DVD+RW do not.

The finalize option is greyed out

    Don't know so...
it should be greyed out for dvd+rw but not for dvd+r. Does he know if he did finalise them when he finished copying.

Its defo greyed out for dvd + R and you dont have do anything for the Dvd + RW. Could it be the brand of disc he is using what brand are you using
