Welcome everyone to the VoIP forum :)
To get the ball rolling, should we put a FAQ together with maybe the following:

    FAQ
    - what is VoIP
    - what hardware is available
    - who are the voip providers (in ireland)
    - who are the voip providers (abroad)
    - what is Skype

    What do ye think?

    Agreed,
Could do up a list of most commonly used hardware for VoIP, I'd be for sticking to VoIP services that can be used in Ireland or atleast you'll be able to get the most out of in Ireland,

Company / Product Info could be like the following:
    Provider: Skype
    Cost: Pay As You Go
    Allows Incoming: NO
Calls to other VoIP Users: NO, only other skype users
    Provided For: Anyone
    WWW: http://www.skype.com

Grr I'm gone to Cork all day today so won't be able to sort things out :(

I found this article very interesting. Discusses some VoIP basics and the 5 major contenders in the US market.

Also this article is very interesting. I can't wait for part two.

Please add supported protocols for each provider. (SIP, IAX etc.) along with encryption (IPSEC? SRTP?) and which geographic numbers they can allocate.

In the section on hardware it would be worth listing some of the suppliers and peoples experiences with them. e.g I found http://store.voxilla.com/ good value.

When talking about VoIP providers it would be worth adding two additional pieces of information (esp. for US ones):
Can you use your own equipment or do you have to use theirs.
Is the equipment you buy from them locked to their service.

I fell into the trap of buying a locked device when I was on holidays in the US. The linksys PAP2 did not say anywhere on the box that it was locked to Vontage (who refused to unlock it), luckly the shop accepted it back and gave me a refund.

Anyone want to suggest a list of the most common hardware that I could put as a sticky?

    [EDIT]
I've added more info to the current sticky to start with http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=250586
Any suggestions and/or comments are welcome :)

You might want to include Cisco 7940/7960 SIP phones. Probably not all that popular because they are expensive, but if somebody is looking for a quality SIP phone, they are worth looking at. Lots of features including support for http-based XML apps, and ethernet pass-thru etc.
