Stereotype I know, no offence meant, but still .... :)

i was there for 2 weeks in september but my friend lived there for a year & a half and she gave me this to say...

"Vancouver is not like Ireland in terms of going out. Most pubs are restaurants in disguise so you end up sitting down at tables and there isn’t much craic. However if you want a pub atmosphere that feels more like home try Doolins on Granville. Open til 1am on weekdays and 3am on Fri and Sat. Another good spot is the Atlantic Trap and Gill (The Trap) on Davie and Seymour. They do lobster for $19.99 which isn’t bad and the bar staff are excellent."

i was in both pubs, doolins was a sunday night so was quiet, but the atlantic trap & gill was great craic - good music, people laughing & shouting like people in pubs are supposed to do - and excellent shots! didn't have the lobster but drooled at the sight of it...and yes the bar staff are excellent, tip them well and you'll get shots on the house!

    enjoy

There's a good bar called The Stone Temple, its on Granville St, there's also a few bars off broadway if you head out towards Kitsalano direction

I was there about two summers ago and i have to say the blarney stone in gastown was a good laugh followed by the purple onion club. Other good spots are the roxy and the commodore both clubs on granville.
Oh and id have to second Doolins!

You could always head to Brandi's on Horby street when Ben Affleck was caught...tisk,tisk!

The bar scene in Vancouver is quite different to Ireland in a lot of ways - more relaxed, lots of sitting outside at tables during the warm summer evenings.

Steamworks and the Irish Heather down in Gastown aren't bad for a pint or two - can be quiet during the week though. Steamworks brew their own beer and you can look out over the harbour.

Check out Main St. and Commercial Drive if you are able to get to them (the Skytrain will drop you near Commercial, for example) - lots of funky places to eat and drink.

Granville St. has a bunch of bars and clubs - wander down the street and make your choice. Richards on Richards can be a bit of a laugh at times (watch out for the occasional shooting outside!).

Granville Island has a few places that are pretty lively - try The Sandbar and the Arts Club Theatre bar.

One of the best things to do is spend a sunny evening sitting on a patio watching the sun go down and the world go by. Try some of the places on Granville Island and you can watch the yachts cruise in and out (both Bridges and the Arts Club bar have patios that look out over False Creek). Malones in Kitsilano has a nice patio that looks over at Kits beach. It looks like the new restaurant at Kits beach will be ready before the summer (you can see it under construction at the moment just beside the tennis courts) so that should be a great place for a beer once the outside seating opens. Jericho sailing club has a great patio with superb views as well.

For some more ideas, pick up a copy of the Georgia Straight - free weekly entertainment paper, lots of cool articles and should set you up to find anything you need/want. Check out their website.

Hey Culchie, There is a very valid reason why I havent been out. I am a girl travelling by myself and I am flat broke, but I do appreciate us Cavan people have a name for being tight so I will let it go ;)

Got back from a week in Vanc on thurs. My mate's been living out there for 3 years. He's says the night life after 11 is fairly limited.

Did have a great pub crawl in Yaletown - in or around mainland street. Unfortunately too much booze was taken to remember pub names. There's a good trendy bar there that does evil shooters, and a micro-brewery type pub that has an almost irish feel to it.

Why pay a fortune when you could goto Cecil just over the Granville Bridge (dodgy looking hotel with painted on window-frames! Not too sleezy inside at all, and stupidly cheap. The girls are so hot you'd never wanna goto an Irish strip club after. :D

Kitsilano area for nice bars. Watch out around mainstreet, unfortunatley it's close to where all the nightlife is. Oh and try travel out of Vancouver too!

The Commodore on Granville St. also used to have a 70's night on a Wednesday or Thursday, can't remember, which was excellent. Everybody used to dress up in the 70's gear. There is a lot of places on Granville street around the area of Granville and Nelson St. The Cellar wasn't a bad place to go, downstairs in Doolins if I remember correctly. I would recommend going to Richards on Richards some time too, and its not a gay bar.

In Kitsilano as well there was a bar called Kits(I think) as well that was jam packed on a Monday night. Had to get there before 9 or else you would be queueing for hours.

Lots of places to go out in Gastown too. The Blarney Stone as mentioned was popular. I was there 2 years ago so things might have changed since then. What I also remember is that the clubs had this terrible policy of making people queue outside their club for ages so as to make their club look more popular. It seemed like the clubs had a competition to see who could get the longest queue. This was very frustrating if you couldnt make it out early before they started making everyone queue.

I loved Vancouver and and I'm sure you will have a great time too.

I think if you are planning to go to vancouver, you should have more on your mind then finding clubs or the local "paddy pub", summer is beautiful in Vancouver
take a walk in Stanely park, take a trip to Vancouver island to see the pacific wildlife, go snowboarding in Whistler (possible still some snow), visit the Okangonan region to taste the local wine. If your looking to go to pubs and clubs why not save yourself the cost of the flight and drink in Ireland, plenty of oppertunities here.

Falconetti's on Commercial Drive is the business. Really good live music at the weekend. Nice and dark with a friendly atmosphere and no ****ty screens showing ****ty US sports
Same for the Fringe Cafe on W Broadway over in Kits. Across from the dive that is the Coppertank
Downtown hasn't much to offer but the Nelson Cafe on Granville and Nelson is ok. That whole Granville area though, what a kip
