Was there in 2003 ... would not recommend it to be honest.

Too hot, food very poor, Rubbish absolutely everywhere, hagglers pestering you on the streets when you walk around.
Myself and the wife got 'Delhi Bellies' as well from the food.
September may be a bit cooler, but that's the minor issue.

Having said that Port El Kantaoui is better than Sousse or Hammmet.
Highlight (only one) was trip to Sahara desert.

I'm 34 now, travelled a fair bit ...Tunisia was the only 'bum' holiday I've been on.

    Sorry ... you did ask

i try to get away 2-3 times a year and i've visited tunisia 3 times now and it aint all that bad! hammamet not good, sousse good, port el kantaoui good, people are all very friendly, but if you dont like haggling stay away from the medina. trip to Sahara recommended.

Don't panic Kermitt -considering you have booked already.
Port El Kantaoui is fine although it is kind of quiet, we went in 2002 and there was only one decent type of pub place to go (a German Beer House).

Along with a previous poster I would recommend the trip to the SAHARA, we went on a 3 day trip and it was great (we were on a 2 week holiday so we had plenty of time for the 3 day trip)

We thought the food was very good in our hotel (good variety, freshly cooked or freshly laid out and presented)

The hawkers + shopowners stall holders etc. are a crowd of doses, i.e. you can't look sideways at anything without the usual
"..I give you good price...number one deal etc. etc...."

the old rule applies "...just walk away..."

I know of a couple of couples who went to Hammamet and had an absolute disaster of a holiday.

Plus just to let you know, I just remembered a work colleague went recently with her husband and daughters to Port El K. and the daughters got a lot of hassle from over excited local men.
    So be warned.

thanks folks, i'm sure we'll have a good holiday, i can deal with hawkers and traders cos i,ve handled them before, not too sure about the randy locals!!! cheers :)

there is a nice local beer, I forget the name but you can buy a bucket full of ice with 4 or 5 bottles in it fairly cheaply

    Yep, beer is good actually.

I wasn't trying to pot a dampner on things, Kermit asked for opinions.

As I said Port El Kantouai is definitely best resort, Sousse is a kip, absolutely disgraceful the ammount of rubbish on the streets, you actually kicking your way through it along the promenade at night.

There's also a cool water park there as well in Port El Kant. , with one of them wave simulators, which was great in the hot weather.

The worst thing for me was the food, I just couldn't seem to get a decent meal. I'm an experienced traveller so I'm not being unrealistic in my expectations, or trying to be over critical.

And to balance things up, I'd say the trip to the Sahara was probably one of my all-time highlights.

    Important note:
DO NOT change too much money in the hotel, as you can't change it back. Change what you need every day: you might be subject to the dictator's whim about today's exchange rate, but at least you don't have to leave your money behind.

Wife and I went there and had a fine, if quiet, time. Kantoui also.

    Recommends:
    - bus trip to the desert, if you don't have time for the three-day one
    - parascending
    - marina in Kantoui

    Not recommends:
    - buying watches there: they're rubbish
    - Avoid indoor swimming pools for aforementioned dehli belly

We were told to bring along a bottle of whiskey to have some fun haggling, but that didn't work out to be much fun.

Beer cheap enough, spirits expensive. HTH.
