I just rang vodafone to see when im due an upgrade, not til november, despite the fact my contract expired on 5 april.

Im on the highest personal tariff (€50 a month) and my bills are normally between 60 and 80. I would have thought id be offered a yearly upgrade?

Anyway if thats the case i might aswell cancel my contract. If i do so can i rejoin vodafone and get a new number etc and avail of new connection offers? or because i was a customer and cancelled will that be held against me?

Im more inclined to stay with vodafone as girlfriend and most mates are also vodafone.

    Any ideas?

I was in the same position as yourself. I rang them several times asking when I was due an upgrade and they just kept saying, "Not yet", despite the fact that the phone I had was pretty sh1te and it was about 20 months since my last upgrade.

I just got bored waiting and switched to O2 about a month ago. They were doing and offer to switch over from Vodafone for €29 which included a Nokia 6610i and a free iPod Shuffle. The offer also included free rental for 3 months which was a brilliant offer. Don't know if they're still doing it though.

Yes, you can move down to RTG then back up to bill pay. You'll be a First Time Connection again.
Here's that other thread on Vodafone upgrades

move down to ready to go? can i just cancel the contract and start a new one? if not then its off to o2

Vodafone customers are not automatically entitled to upgrades after 1 yr, the best thing to do when your contract expires is to tell customer care that your current fone is faulty and you want a new 1, if they dont budge, tell them your going to move to take your business else where and go to 02 then ask to speak to the customer care agents supervisor, i work in a mobile fone shop and this never fails. if you cancel your existing contract it takes 2 weeks to process and then if you sign back up to vodafone they'll charge you €100 deposit!!!

If you move down to RTG and back up to bill pay again , you can keep the same number. If you cancel altogether and go for a new contract you'll have a new number, thats the only difference.

Have just done exactly that with vodafone and pretty much for the same reason. I told them I had wanted a different phone and didnt really cut much ice with them so they sent me the forms out for migrating to RTG, signed them and sent them back, paid final bill in the post office and got a call 30 mins later to advise me migration was happening.

Then ported my number to meteor the next day in CPW and was much more straight forward - got the 6230 for €49 for Meteor 200, 200 minutes of calls per month and free meteor sms until end of Dec so happy enough with that!

Was pretty painless and hopefully should get a bit more value out of meteor....they also as it stands at the moment allow upgrades every 12 months on pay later.

You actually didn't need to migrate to RTG before moving to Meteor. You just have to go into Meteor or CPW and when you move onto Meteor bill pay, your contract with Vodafone will automatically be cancelled for you. Much simpler!

so what do i need to do rach?

If i migrate to rtg do i need to buy a rtg phone or just a sim, how long would that all take, prob be quicker taking my number to 02, if only they did the d500 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

Meteor do the d500. It's under 150e I think on some tariffs.
So ok, if you wanna stay with Vodafone cos all your friends are on it, just ask to migrate to RTG. They will prob send you out some forms, sign em, send em back. Then you will be moved onto RTG. You use your normal phone. They'll either send you a new sim card with same number or sometimes they just let you use the old one. Then in a few days, you just go into a Vodafone agent and ask to migrate back onto billpay. That's it really.
If you wanna move to another network, just bring in the account statement page of your last Vodafone bill plus a driver's license or passport and it should be all put through in 2 hours.

u dont need to buy a new fone, for a migration you have to sign a form sayin you agree to the changeover but it takes 2weeks to process

dunno if i could be doing with meteor, whats the coverage like? wonder would it cut it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

Well, it depends where you live for a start. But they say they're 100% covered now so I don't think there's a problem. Ask friends who live near you what it's like.

What I should have included was that I had 6 weeks left to run on my contract and when it became evident about the upgrade not being a possibility, they were very cagey about ending the contract, mentioning 2 weeks for it to all take place and seemed to be easier to change to RTG due to termination charges (that were minimal) - didnt actually intend to go straight to metoer bill pay, just the way it worked out!

I can honestly say from hands-on experience that at the moment meteor bill pay is outstripping Vodafone and O2. Their prices (20c flat) are savage and your free mins cover ya to uk landlines, the other two charge ya extra for that!!

I'm on vodafone and have yet to go outside my free mins any month so, I havnt payed anything ove rthe monthly fee, free beats 20c per min. Plus with the tariff im on, it's a flat rate of 20c if/when I go outside my free mins.

I've a query here. I upgraded to the V525 last August with vodafone, but I want to change, and I'm thinking of doing this RTG manouver. I presume when I upgraded that I signed a new contract for 12 months. Will moving to RTG cancel this contract, or do I have to see it out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

You'll have to see it out I'm afraid.
