Dell Dimension 8100

    Hi,

I recently upgraded this PC's RAM.
It had 128MB and I added another 256MB.
The RAM appears to be installed in pairs.
When I opened the PC there were four memory slots and all were occupied!
Two of the slots held 64MB Dimms.
The other two had what looked like RAM in them but they were about half the height of the RAM I had bought and the RAM that was already there.
Additionaly the 64MB Dimms and the two new 128MB Dimms had a metal covering on one side, this was not present on the two 'Bogus' Dimms.
I messed around with it for a while, and apparently the two 'bogus' Dimms don't do anything except sit on the Motherbord.
Has anyone come across this before?
If so, what is the point of these 'bogus' Dimms.
Sorry if this posting is all over the place, but this has me head befuddled.

I may be wrong but I have a sneaky suspicion that the 8100 takes Rambus. I know for certain that the 8200 does.

If thats the case it would explain why your memory is not working. Rambus is very expensive. It would be cheaper to buy a new Dell system than upgrade the memory in that one.

    Sorry for the bad news.

    [edit]

Just had a quick google and the Dimension 8100 does use rambus memory

    Cheers,
But the memory works grand. The machine is now running with 384MB RAM, the original 2*64 + the new 2*128.
You're right about the price though - €100 for 256MB, eek!
    But it wasn't my money.
It is Rambus too, RDRAM. I don't know why they have a PC that takes this RAM but I think they bought it years ago and wanted a high-end PC then.
What really bothers me is the blank (bogus) memory sticks already in there. There were two of them and they appeared to have no function at all.
Which has made me wonder why the were there in the first place.
    Any ideas?
I can scan an image of this blank RAM but I'm too lazy!

they're called crimm's, and they're basically there to complete the circuit (continuity rimm's). They have no memory on them at all, and can be replaced with proper rimm's.

Thanks for that, I never came across them before, the guy I was upgrading the PC for was eyeing me suspiciously when I couldn't come up with a decent explanation for them.
crimms - Are you taking the piss? :D

Fair enough, I'm getting suspicious, years of swallowing bricks does that to you!
    Cheers again.
