    its got to do with the slight angle difference in the triangles

    the red triangle is at 20.6°
    the dark green triangle is at 21.8°

    the slope of the red triangle is 3/8, slope of the green one is 2/5. This means they don't form a straight edge together, the difference is so small though that you don't really notice it.

    Therefore the shapes formed in the top picture and with a square cut out in the bottom are not triangles but quadrilaterals and the 1/2 width by height area rule doesn't apply.

    you can see the difference in the angles easily by the difference in space the triangles take from the squares. not that crazy really.
