    Hi,

I have decent enough bike (€500) and commute alot. I don't like leaving the bike on the street in the city centre as I know it'll get robbed. What I normally do is cycle into the car parks and lock it there. Its safe enough from the eyes of skangers. However, the carpark staff dont reallly approve of me using the carpark for my bike and also it can be quite a steep climb in some of the carparks. Any ideas?

Besides under your arse - top of Grafton street is usually Ok aswell as there are security cameras there - although I locked mine outside my office which is pretty secluded in Dublin 2 and it was robbed - all ¬800 worth locked with 2 locks.

There is a bike repair place in Temple Bar where you can park your bike.
It's on one of those streets perpedicular to Dame Street, closer to Dame Street than Temple Bar. I can't remember which one.

Place is in the basement and is a right mess. I've never used it but walked in one day when I was passing, maybe 2 years ago. Very cheap.
Sorry I don't have more info.

I tend to move my bike around, to be as close to the shop I'm going into as possible.

The police station on pearse street is good, I've been using it almost daily since Christmas and never had my bike tampered with. It may be there for 13 hours at a time and is always in one peice when I get back to it. That said I wouldn't lock a nice bike in town anywhere

How much would you pay to park your bike in dublin city centre if you knew it would be supervised and probably not tampered with?

Isn't there a place beside pearse street dart station where you can lock you bike?

In Finland they have these kind of mini bike sheds. They're like big bins where you roll your bike in, you stick a few euro in and u get to lock it with a combinaiton lock. or something like that.

Would you pay to park it in town? Say €3 a day?

I think I would. Although, cycling in and out of town, I'd be more afraid of getting killed then my bike knicked. About 90% of people i know that cycle into Dublin City centre on a regular basis have been involved in a pretty significant accident.

A good place would be down near merrion square, or the pepper can church I think it's called.. cos it's really quite, and not many skanger go there. also a good place is right outside the dail, as there is a gurda there 24/7,,

I would have thought the busier the street the less chance of it getting robbed was because the thief would think there would be more of a chance of getting caught. I guess people just ignore these things nowadays though :(

Yeah - look at the number of partialially dismembered bikes on O'Connell St!

I wouldn't park my bike in town TBH, I always get the bus when stopping in town.

Best place is Trinity really. Very unlikely that anyone would touch it in there. As long as you're leaving before 12 it's perfect.

I've seen a video of two guys in New York cutting through a lock on a busy street, no-one challenged them (it was their own bike).
If you lock your bike in town, get a damn decent lock, mine's a sold secure gold:

I think when locking your bike in town, you've 2 options:

    a) go for a high visibility area with lots of people and hope the thief wont have the balls to rob it/ much time to do so
    b) go for a really quiet area with no one around, hoping that the few who see it wont be scummers looking for a nice bike. However if they do see it, they'll have ages to work on the locks

Looking at all the bits of bikes in town, I reckon b) is best.

Trinity is pretty safe with a fair few quiet areas where no one goes but yeah it closes at 12. The top of Ely Place near Stephen's Green East seems safe enough-not many skangers there. Ive access to an underground carpark in the IFSC which seems to be dead safe as well. Anyone know any safe places west of O'Connell St./Trinity? Not sure if I'd be bothered to pay to park my bike though.

Trinners is _not_ safe. Mate had his 500 quid Kona nicked from there within 1 hour. Bolt cutters through the cable lock and off they went.

If a nice bike is there, they'll get it. Best bet is not to park in town, no chance I'd park my bike in the city center.

If you value it, don't leave it in public period.

    Square Wheel Cycleworks
    Temple Lane
It's a mess because they do repairs not like a lot of box shifters around town.
