To coffee or not to coffee?

    Hey,

I am off coffee/caffeine (i.e. no tea or coffee, but a little bit of chocolate...)

    My problem -

    1. My brain loves coffee (makes me happy, creative) but my body does not (upset stomach, rapid heatbeat)

    2. When I drink coffee I get no cold sores, when I don't drink coffee I get (the odd) coldsore. I FREAKIN HATE COLDSORES!

I'm a little dilemmaised (yes, not a real word) as what to do.

Are the "health" reasons superior to the happiness/no coldsore reasons?

(sorry if this is a bit odd, but I am sure you can relate this to some aspect of your life.)

I'd say the coldsores are more due to the 'stress' of not talking coffee than the lack of coffee itself.

Would you not consider decaf? Might work as a placebo with some of the positive stuff and not include the negative stuff.

You could always go for the middleground, and make lots of really weak cups of coffee.
I used to OD on caffene to the point where I'd have panic attacks... the worst of which resulted in me fainting... although I was drinking (literally) nothing but coke and coffee for the whole day.
Needless to say, I don't do that anymore... I can still enjoy a few cups of coffee without becoming a quivering mess, because I make a pretty weak cup and just sip from it over the course of an hour or so. (Yes, I like cold coffee)

Yeah, decaf is definitly a good idea for those times when you might just want a warm drink that tastes like coffee and not need the caffene fix as much :)

Had to do the same last year cause of the heart thingy , but only had to do it for two weeks , but with me it was all things caffene related , hard at the time as I only drink coke , lucozade and tea , and drank loads of each per day . Turned out my problem was nothing to do with these so now I can drink these no prob , gotta take 2 pills a day though .So has yours been confirmed as caffene related ?

A change is as good as a break. A piece of food would probably do as well, by improving your blood sugar level. I imagine the "pick-me-up" effect is merely the coffee removing your caffeine withdrawal.

I would really wonder about this.....

Could be something to do with the fact that the coffee would speed up the metabolism.. you probably only get coldsores as a symptom of being a bit run-down.
Maybe when you "wean" yourself off the coffee and your energy levels normalize, you'll get less and less coldsores.
Meanwhile take a good multivit to help maintain your energy levels.

coffee "in moderation" is the key!

try walking past butlers in the morning on grafton street, the smell wafts out onto the street and they give you a free chocolate (and two free chocolates on valentine's day!) with every beverage purchased!

I had to quit coffee about a year and a half ago because it was aggravating an ulcer in my stomach.

It was really hard for the first few months, but after a while my body got used to not ingesting loads of caffine every day and got back to normal. So I don't really notice not taking coffee these days.

Although I'd recommend tapering off your caffine intake rather than cold cutting it, otherwise you get really bad headaches in my experience.

Smoking, drinking, caffeine, and high-sodium foods all leech essential minerals from your body - maybe u need to look at your vitamin and mineral levels, and possible link there to the cold sores.

I thought that hadn't been proven with caffine?

I thought smoking only led to heart disease, cancer and stroke.

If I thought it leeched minerals from my system I'd quit right away!!

I've realised that I can't drink more than 4 pints of any beer (maybe half a bottle of wine etc.) without puking all of the next day.

This is something fairly recent, say in the last year, but has anyone got this? I'm wondering whether it's to do with my vast coffee and tea consumption.

Try green tea, ok, initially it tastes like heated pond water, but you get used to it, its quite pleasant and apparantly really good for you (antioxidants, flavinoids, cancer-curing and whatnot)

    and coffee is MANK

I used to get that when my ulcer was acting up.

    Getting bad heartburn?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

    On the cold sore thing:

I was told once that a paste of dry coffee and water is good for getting rid of them! Never tried it.... would look pretty shltty! Could work though?
