Does anyone know a good place, preferably in Dublin, to get steel wheels blasted and powdercoated in a specific colour?

The only powdercoaters I know of are KW Industrial Coatings in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan (We use them for work :) )
There are powdercoaters in Dublin but I'm not sure of names. Security Shutters or Ring-Gard in Coolock might do it for you. If not, they might know of someone

There is one just outside Dunboyne, well Navan Rd, actually Trim Rd, sheesh I'm even typing like a local :)

Navan Rd passed Blanchardstown Shopping centre, dual carriageway comes to single lane then about 1 1/2 miles to left turn for Trim (right to Ratoath and Fairyhouse) about 3/4 miles down Trim Rd on the right hand side.

They sand blasted the wheels for my Minor van, I didn't want the plastic coating because I've seen where it can hold water in any cracks from hitting kebs etc.

Thanks folks, I'll check it out.

Am I wrong in my understanding that powder coating is the toughest finish on steel wheels?

Its not that tough, I have seen powdercoating de-laminate over time and would be more inclined to recommend you just use two-pack spray paint which any spray painter can apply.

Powdercoating used be very popular but the limited colour choice and the need for special etching and heat treating steps make it impractical for many items.

From experience with Mini subframes (which rust like nothing on earth) the two-pack treatment is the toughest and if applied over two pack primer will last forever.

    Thanks -

Hmmm, that was the approach I was going with. Getting someone to do the painting is proving tricky - I got wheels blasted and primed with 2 pack primer, but don't I need some sort of survival suit to spray? Is there someone who'd do these small jobs? I have 14 and two cars so I need to do them piece-meal.

The paint/primer is mad money too.

I paid €120 for three litres of primer and a litre of hardener last week. It is DeBeers paint which is good quality and goes on nice and flat and you can put in on unthinned if you want a high-build on rusted surfaces. I expect to be able to prime two cars, several wheels and lots of components with the four litres of paint it will make up.

2k paint is highly toxic but you can buy special 3M disposable masks which are effective for 40 hours use and tyvek suits are only a few quid. I bought a compressor in Aldi for €99 and it is well able to handle this type of work, so in all I don't think it is too expensive (the same compressor from Sealey is €240 - still not too bad).

I don't have a garage and I do my spraying in a mates place, but I have to take parts of cars into my attic to strip and prep them - I spent last night Nitromors-ing an air filter housing for the X1/9. Its a case of finding ways to get stuff done unless you have deep pockets (which I don't).

I just picked up a set of Merc 8 hole alloys for a €100 which need work, how much for shotblasting and priming?

The wheel below is the worst.

    Mike.

I wouldn't shotblast these - a wire brush, some Nitromors and two-pack primer will get them good as new. Wire brush the loose stuff off, Nitromors them to bare metal wet 400 grit as many marks off as possible. The dents can be filled with car body filler or Plastic Padding (which I prefer) before priming.

I paid €80 to get a set of wheels blasted and painted back in January but they were much worse than yours.

You shouldn't pay more than €50 for priming if you prep them yourself.

    Nitromors them to bare metal

Is that done by painting it one then waiting...then scrubbing off? Sorry for sounding like a wetback....! I know nothing about heavy duty refurbishing work.

    Mike.

Yes Mike, paint it on, wait fifteen minutes and scrub or scrape off - usually with wire wool or a brass wire brush (to avoid damaging the aluminium). It is easy to use but you need gloves and goggles as it is nasty stuff. It makes stripping paint off a doddle though.
