Rover remembered

Its not every day that a major motor manufacturer goes to the wall like Rover did this week and I can’t help feeling a bit sad at the dismissive reaction to this event particularly by the English themselves. :(
They produced some fine cars in their day and deserved a better end than this.

My favourite was the Rover SD1 – this looked so cool – the UK’s answer to the Citroen CX I always thought. They looked very nice decked out in their police role as well.

The mini of course was the first car for many and it was in one of these that I learned to drive. A bit like Alfa’s though – you could get a good one or bad one

The frumpy P5 – not pretty but nevertheless had something nice about it that I can’t quite put my finger on right now.

The Rover P6 was far more elegant and was on my list as a classic until I bought the Daimler.

The start of the rot set in with the Montego – a forgettable car and could be quite problematic.

Pity it could not last as this car the RD45 was due to replace both the 45 and 25 but alas it was not to be. :(

Horrid cars. That's Rover summed up.

Ah you picked the wrong P5, Alfa.

I never really warmed to the P6 look, but I loved that woofly V8. Also, it shared a lot of similarities to the DS like unitary construction.

BTW: The CX design was robbed from a BL prototype, so I reckon the similarity between it and the SD1 were more than coincidental.

The Rover SDI was a car ahead of its time, they had the shape right for speed and economy, the interior was nicely laid out and the dash at night looked like the cockpit of an aeroplane.

Yes I had one, it was the 2000cc 1985 model, I think that could have been the last of the production.

I think they started in 77 / 78 and in all that time they still had silly annoying details the rattle in the back parcel shelf and at least one exhaust a year because of the bad anchor points.

It was fast and averaged 30 > 33 to the gallon, it could be used as an estate car when the back seat was folded down and never refused a heavy load.

They also had real metal in them, yes I liked that car, bought it a year old and at a great price even for the time.

    I'm afraid that's actually a P4 ;)

I'm currently driving a '93 800 Vitesse 2.0 turbo which has Recaro leather seats, goes like the clappers, starts on the button and will do 120mph. Unfortunately its mostly a Honda....
