    Irish trains in Spain

    17 April 2005
Iarnrod Eireann is sparing no expense to mark its forthcoming introduction of new commuter trains. TV ads to mark the launch were filmed last week in San Sebastian on the northern coast of Spain.

The new ads, which were created by AFA O'Meara, will feature Craig Doyle, best known as presenter of the BBC's holiday programme.

A team of some 40 people, including director John Hayes and a full Irish production team from Toytown Films, were flown out to Spain for the shoot.

Since the new trains are being built in Spain, it was decided to bring the ad team to them. The ads are expected to run in the autumn.

Woweeeee all this for another 36 2900 series ailcars nothing new to see we already have 80 of them

That is unless they are actually referring to the new intercity coaches also being built by CAF in Spain for Dublin Cork which are due in advance of the 36 extra 2900 series

We need a few hi-speed intercity Pendelinos.

    Don't get this, though:
Funded by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan, the contract has been awarded to Mitsui of Japan, in partnership with Rotem of the Republic of Korea and Tokyu Car Corporation of Japan.

they are talking about the new intercity ones, the whole article wasnt quoted by the original poster. They go on to talk about a half hour being shaved off the journey time thanks to the new trains

Just to clarify, there are three live orders for new rolling stock for Irish Rail.

1: New 2900 suburban grade railcars due from CAF. 36 due this year.
2: Mk4 coaches in push/pull sets also from CAF. 67 due this year.
3: Intercity grade railcars, from the Mitsui-led consortium. 120 due in 2007/2008.

The CAF coaches will have no effect on journey times since they have the same design speed as the MK3 coaches they displace. However it will be the routes (Galway and Limerick mostly) which gain MK3 coaches in lieu of the MK2d coaches that is where you will see the reductions of 15-30 minutes.
