[wondering out loud] Do we have a credible threat that isn't being spoken about? [/wondering out loud]

Flights at Dublin airport back on schedule

Flights at Dublin Airport are reported to be running on schedule again this afternoon, following some delays to passengers this morning as a result of increased security measures.

Extra security staff are due to be deployed tomorrow in a bid to further ease the situation.

However, Vincent Wall, of the Dublin Airport Authority, asked that passengers on short-haul flights to the UK and Europe must present themselves for check in at least 90 minutes before their departure time, while those on trans-Atlantic and charter flights should get to check-in at least two hours in advance.

Sometimes you need the Examiner to ask the obvious question.

    Dublin airport lacks security scanners
DUBLIN Airport is operating with around half the number of security machines used in similar-sized airports around Europe. ….According to the Dublin Airport Authority, it has just 11 security machines for passengers operating within the main building plus one machine for staff. …In contrast, several other airports including Stockholm’s Arlanda, Düsseldorf and Brussels have over 20 machines each, despite dealing with similar passenger numbers. …

Recent EU figures show that the three airports as well as Dublin all recorded passenger figures of 14-16 million in 2003. Dublin is the 16th busiest airport within the EU. … a survey by the Irish Examiner revealed that the three other airports have considerably more security checkpoints than Dublin. A spokesperson for Düsseldorf Airport said it used 28 security machines, while it had plans to add on another three within the near future. She claimed passengers at Düsseldorf rarely experienced any type of delays due to problems at security checkpoints. Stockholm’s Arlanda airport operates 20 machines, while Belgium’s Zaventem also has a similar number.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Airport Authority said the focus of its present plans to improve waiting times for boarding was the provision of additional security staff.
He pointed out that the present design of the terminal limited the ability of the airport to increase the number of security scanners. …”

Dublin Airport to employ 120 new security staff
    09/05/2005 - 16:06:25

Dublin Airport will have 120 new security staff in place by mid-June as it bids to implement extra security measures and reduce waiting times for passengers.

A joint EU-Department of Transport report found serious breaches of security at the airport recently.

Passengers have faced lengthy queues as the airport has since stepped up security. However, it will have opened an additional five passenger security screening channels by mid June, bringing the total number to 17.

"We have moved as quickly as possible to direct additional resources into this priority area, given the physical constraints of the terminal building and the three-week training period for new security staff. By June we will have up to 45% more staff dedicated to passenger security screening," said Robert Hilliard - director Dublin Airport.

"We would like to thank all our customers for their continuing patience and remind them that they can help us by checking-in at least ninety minutes before their scheduled flight departure times; by carrying just one item of hand luggage; and by ensuring they have nothing in their clothes or on their person that might require additional security checks."

It wasn't TOO bad early this morning provided you went to the A pier side. About 20mins in total. I've seen it a lot worse on a monday morning. Taking off your shoes is a bit funny though. They must be expecting a shoebomber

I used Dublin airport last week and there wasn't really any queue. Only 1 person in front of me for the metal detector. OK, it was Wednesday, 9:30am, maybe not peak time but still.
