    Hello all,

Quick question for ye all. Sometimes when i log onto my laptop.. it's quite slow to actually show the Desktop.

It just sticks on the log-on screen with "loading personal settings" underneath my name. Sometimes for a couple of minutes... and eventually loads the Desktop.

Anyways.. how would you suppose i find out what's causing this delay? It doesn't always happen.. but it's happening more frequently and with longer delays recently.

    Thanks in advance!

Wireless/wired NIC trying to acquire IP address?
Try setting a static IP on the NIC and see if it improves the logon time.

My friend has a similar problem. Her Laptop is setup up to connect to the UCD network via wireless. Could I do the same whilst not affecting connection the UCD network?

right click on my computer and go to manage (assuming it's xp. come to think of it some more info might be handy), then go to event viewer and check the logs. anything that's got a red x next to it and a log gap between other items in the logs may be your problem.

most common cause is a dns issues though at logon, but that tends to be more common when logging on to a domain (is it?). that said there may be domain services trying to do things and timing out.

google for slow logon and you'll see what I mean.

    Cheers for the help all..

Was meant to post that my OS was XP Home in the original post.

Checked the logs and checking down through the 'security section' gives me this 'Failure Audit' error around the same time as attempting log-on:
IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

And it was almost 2 minutes between that and the next entry.. presumably the delay.Event Type: Failure Audit
    Event Source: Security
    Event Category: Policy Change
    Event ID: 615
