Whats the best deal out there? Are there any other providers other than AA and RAC?

    Thanks.

Check your insurance provider, some offer this as an extra add-on (might be cheaper than actually going with AA or RAC.

I took out AA the other day. I found it better than RAC from the point-on-view that AA cover the person and not the car i.e. it does not matter what car you are driving, if you require assistance you are covered regardless.

RAC cover the car not the person.

Bit late.....was just browsing and saw this thread....hope it helps.

    Hibernian offer it as standard.

the RAC eh? didnt even think or them at all, I just went with the AA. Must be all those years of hearing "This is Carol Coleman with AA road watch" on the wireless.

Are you sure about that? didnt see them saying that anywhere.
If thats the case i'd then prefer the RAC. That kind of cover from the AA is no good if my gf is driving the car and it breaks down.

Best one I've heard is of a Taxi drive with the full AA cover including onward travel. Broke down soon after leaving Leeds, the AA ended up carring his passengers to the airport - Stansted :D

You can get her joined up at a discount - but still would be more than just having the car insured.

    quote from the AA website:

AA Membership is personal to you, the member. It covers you whether driving or are a passenger in any car, because you are the person covered not your car

Realistically, is breakdown insurance really worthwhile? If you do big mileage, fair enough, but middle-of-nowhere breakdowns are relatively rare these days and there are few problems you can't get out of for a couple of hundred euros. The AA will always help you out for cash, even if you're not a member, won't they?

It would be best to buy a coverage for you rather than buying it for your car... so AA cover would be best choice..

Had an incident Sunday last that required assistance. GF was in the car with me and she has AA cover, I don't. Got a visit from AA breakdown assistance to help with a clutch problem. They fitted a temporary part and then escorted me home as I was unable to drive >35kph to make sure I got there ok. Three days later (when it suited me) they sent a flatbed truck and delivered my car to the garage. It didn't cost me a penny!

I was never expecting a problem as the car is decent shape.

tbh the fact that RAC covers the car would suit a lot of one-car families with multiple drivers. Not sure how AA works if I was driving my GF's car, without her in it???

You are covered if you are driving a friends car with AA. Thats what the AA chap told me anyway.

AA covers you even if you are a passenger in the car.
