MS Project FREE download?

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a legitimate free download of MS Project? It must be legit and free, as I'm using it for teaching a course in a few weeks time.

There used to be a few places (e.g the Columbia University PM website http://www.columbia.edu/~jm2217/), but the download links seem to have been removed.

    Thanks in advance...

If it was available for download then it was probably a mistake.

Best I can suggest is the 60 day trial version of Project 2003 from Microsoft.

WTF microsoft aren't a charity , and didn't get to have $50,000,000,000.00 in the war chest by being generous.

If you try the trial - check the license to see if you are allow to do anything more than evaluate it
If you can't afford the software you should NOT be doing the course, if you didn't include the price of necessary SW in the course price ...
It's not your fault that microsoft like to make money, but even if you were to use dodgy software they laughing either way if you get caught or not since thier user base has increased...

( love the way it's called an office family member even though it's more expensive than office ) you could try alternatives - eg: Primavera Suretrak is about half to two thirds the price - depends on how detailed it has to be , you could also get second hand copies of project on eBay.

Sorry about the rant but muggins got shafted by a retail copy of project that we needed in a hurry - it wouldn't even install till we rang microsoft connections and got them to post out the service pack CD

Using that software in college myself, thought by the title of the thread that I'd be on a winner. Very expensive software, doesnt look like expensive software :)

I'm finding out there are a lot of legitimate places to download MS Project... for example...

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6311,00.asp

    http://www.downseek.com/download/21243.asp

And there are lots more too. I have checked the licences available in detail, and they give unlimited use as far as I can see. I'll get one of the guys in the Law department to have a closer look next week.

I am very well aware that MS are NOT a charity... this piece of software is required for a course I am teaching... I didnt choose it, but if I wanna teach the course I gotta dance the dance if you know what I mean. I was just curious about a download site because I was aware that there was a download link for MS Project 95 on the Columbia University SW Project Management site last year http://www.columbia.edu/~jm2217/... the link has been removed for some reason.

C'aptn Midnight... I agree with what you are saying, but you have to realise that MS Project is the most commonly used PM tool around... it is almost ubiquitous, and 90% + of the projects in which I have been involved have used MS Project. Third level courses are bound to teach it on all PM courses... very few would do the course if it wasn't thought.

I am a huge Open Source advocate, and if I was choosing software I would love to use an OSS alternative http://proj.chbs.dk/ (I would ALSO teach MS Project tho). I have no real interest or desire in increasing Microsoft's user base, but if you are offering a PM course, you gotta offer MS Project as part of that course.

    They'll be the demo versions.

If it was legit, it will have been under agreement with Microsoft, and under very tight conditions. If not, well, someones chops probably got properly roasted. And by the looks of the site, it looks more like a page thats intended for internal university use only.

Which is why its not up for free download. If its that much of a money-maker, I know I wouldn't. As for the third level, its probably true that MS donate software to these courses, but thats to the students of these courses only, and again under a special license with the student and the institute.

its quite commonplace in us universities for site licenses for software to be available to all faculty staff and students. chances are that the software is there for use only in the university of columbia. those other links seem to be just trial versions, which should ok for, that is if they last long enough :)

Not so uncommon in Ireland either. AFAIK, all the Institutes of Technology are under agreement, and I would imagine a lot of the other "big name" colleges would be too.

No... this site is available as a resource to everyone. I talked to the people who set it up last Summer.

If it was intended for internal University use only, the site would be restricted. There are plenty of University sites that are restricted for whatever reason (for example in IT Carlow and UCD, both of where I work... I have access to some stuff exclusively because of my IP address or passworded intranet etc).

Ain't that the truth. Primavera is the other one I've seen, but even so Project has way more than 90% if you exclude the bespoke systems and Excel. Still I would have thought that you'd have included a cost for the sw in the course price (I am assuming it's for business peps who can afford it - flame away if I'm wrong)

Of you'll have to be careful with the course timetable make sure you get it all done before D-day :D

I would never flame such an esteemed poster as you, Mon Capitan... ;)

Especially since I think we are sort of saying the same thing (arnt we???)... and I 100% agree with everything you have said above...
