So, how much did you cost IRMA?

Reading the various posts on Boards.ie and Jamie Smyth's article in today's Irish Times got me thinking - IRMA reckon's illegal downloading of songs costs the industry x millions or whatever a year.

But I for one, downloaded two songs on the spur of the moment - I would not have gone out and bought the albums they were on, so my act of downloading did not cost IRMA or the industry anything.

So, if you did not download a song/album, would you have gone out and bought it?

If you did NOT download a song, would you have bought it instead? 1 vote

Yes, I would have bought the song/album

I'd say I've cost them about €30 overall. Most of the bands I really like I buy their CDs regardless of having downloaded it already. The rest I never would have bought in the first place.

I refuse to pay for an album. Paying 20 euro+ for something I would listen to a few times and then leave gathering dust on a shelf isnt my kind of financial smart spark.

Downloading some songs has actually encouraged me to buy the albums on a few ocasions. So if anything, they've made money from my downloads.

Most of what I download generally can't be bought any more as they've been deleated or are extreamly difficult to get a hold of. The rest would just be five minute pop trash that I would never pay for anyway.

Nah, I've more than enough albums as it is, and I don't even listen to half the stuff I download, just do it out of habit or because it's there.

    Hands up here
In the last 3 weeks Ive downloaded about 30 songs. Was going to buy the killers album so I downloaded 4 songs by them, thought they were dreadful so did nothing more and deleted (I really did) the songs I had downloaded. Theres about 20e saved already
However...Downloaded 2 songs by a guy called john legend, never heard of him before, was so blown away by him I ordered his album off amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002X314C/qid=1114185534/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-2563339-4266302?v=glance&s=music&n=507846
I then proceeded to download as much live recordings of his as I could find, it aint ever gonna be released anywhere. Are IRMA gonna say tough, if we dont release in this country youre not entitled to hear it? 2 fingers lads!
Also have mpegs of my fav artists playing live on public tv in america that aint ever gonna be broadcast over here or released for sale. thoughts on that?

I've downloaded music from AllofMp3 to 'try' a band.... and when I've decided I've liked it I bought the same tracks on iTunes to give some money back to the performer.

    btw. Wilco absolutely rocks.

Yes, I've done some, erm, investigation, ahem, into US tv shows that I used to love (check out Reno 911 - hilarous). But I think IRMA have a narrow focus - they are really only interested in songs/album downloads. I don't know if they have the capacity/resources to go after every type of download.

I don't think TV shows would fall under their remit.

this is exactly the same situation for me, and the most tech-savy artists are making good use of the downloading "phenomenam" by releasing download only singles and titbits off albums etc.
