DVD Burning

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 Notebook. It has a DVD Writing gismo, when I try and burn something it tells me Media not ready, and prompts me to Sonic Record Now website, and want's major blips for DVD burning s/w. Is there anyway around this? or can I use a free site's s/w? :confused:
