Do you consider yourself smarter than the "average guy"?

I was just wondering how people consider themself compared to the "average person"... I am going through a period of my life where my over-confidence is becoming arrogance, and I know this is not good. Probably because I am a very competitive person and everything is going great for me at the moment, but this prevents me from enjoying small things in the day to day life. Fortunately this hasn't brought to disrespect for other people, however I can get easily annoyed...

Anyway, I know many people do not like comparisons with others, but I am sure everybody at a certain stage of their life find themselves in situations where they think to be better/worse of others.

How do you see yourself, and why?

Was going to vote myself smarter tbh, but the poll seems a bit schizophrenic. Are you talking just about intelligence, or all kinds of qualities?

I dont care what other people think of me, to a certain extent. If someone doesn't like me, "has a problem" with me its their problem. If happy with how my life is then Im not gonna change it to suit other people.

Intelligence, along with general success in life would be the main factors (someone said "intelligent without ambition is useless", I don't remember who though).....

    Thanks for the schizophrenic :D

Just to be consistent with what I wrote above I chosed "I am God" :)

I'm a complete loser with a high (though never tested) IQ. So I figured that would balance out and voted myself average... can you smell the humility?

There should be an option above "I am God" with my name... But seriously though, I'm great!

I'm great and probably smarter than the average guy ;) . But honestly I couldnt care less what people think of me or how smart they are.

I am someoned who is good at the mathematical side of things and my spatial reasoning is high. But I dunno if your going into the details of IQ, however I find languages a bit difficult. I would say that I am generally smarter than the "average guy", I am highly ambitious, I know what I have to do to get what I want so I'll do it. I'm doing the leaving cert this year, and I know I have to get 500 points (aiming for over) to be safe enough to get the college course I want.

If you turn your head sideways and look at the results thus far, they just about make an exact inverse bell-curve! So either boards people are abnormally dumb/clever, or somebody's telling a poo-poo..

Once went to a M*nsa meeting a good few years back. Bloody hell, I've very rarely encountered such a bunch of boring, self important, borderline aspergers bunch of eejits in my life. When you're trapped in a conversation with some 40+ yr old boring on about star wars and foaming spittle at the corner of his mouth, the realisation that life is too short hits you very hard(and I was 19 at the time). That and the fact that some of them were goin on about rubiks cubes 10 yrs too late. It was a scary cliche from start to finish. Though I will say one of the chicks was v cute and was equally bored to tears.

And to all these people who think themselves God, I'm gonna start smitin' people around here. I think I'll start with a plague of boils. Always went down well in the old days.........

Accordingly to both an IQ and an english test of sorts, I am actually smarter then the average....but so what?

I could have taken the test on a monday morning and turned out way below average.

Give out about the pomp and self importantance of it all, but you obviously felt the need to attend yourself.

I'm far too smart to vote in that obviously flawed poll.
I am smarter than the average - better work, better personal life
The first half might apply to me, the second half doesn't.

It's quite common to see intellectualism (and pseudo-intellectualism) confused with intelligence. Especially on boards :)

I'm 42.323% more intellectual than a hyper-modified Deep Blue Sea Shark on a Wednesday.

    mmmm Dr. McAlester..

the discussion becomes moot when you take into account the fact that the "average guy" is a complete nincompoop

    Average LC points = 300

    WTF?

Nope, not really. Ever gone to a party that turned out crap? I was invited so I went to check it out. Don't remember any pomps though. Maybe they were in disguise

why is it that in mixed school's they have to drop the class speed so the boy's don't get left behind!(this is sexist)
why is it that girls single sex schools get better grades than mixed or single sex male schools?

Every day dealing with the general public, I realise more and more that I am more intelligent than the average guy.

I used to think I was average but I guess I was comparing myself to the only people I knew at the time which were my friends/peers/classmates etc ie with secondary school classmates you're obviously filtered into classes where the students are of broadly the same intellignce. With friends you tend to gravitate towards people of broadly the same intelligence and interests as you.

However when you go out into the real world and begin your working life and associate or come in contact with a much broader range of people, you get a better sense of where you stand intelligence-wise compared to average.

So at this stage I do feel I am more intelligent than the average guy.

But its all for nought and doesn't really mean a damn at the end of the day because I have intelligence but no ambition, drive or confidence.

I envy the bricklayer who is as thick as two short planks, who talks about nothing but soccer, hasn't a clue who Kofi Annan is (what team does he play for :D ) but who is happy, confident, and earning a mint to support his family setting up his bricklaying company or what ever. He had the personality, drive and confidence to overcome any intellectual shortcomings he may have had to make a success of his life.

So I don't look down on this hypothetical bricklayer because I am more intelligent than him, I look up to him.

You can go far with intelligence, drive and ambition. You can go far with lesser intelligence but with drive and ambition, but you'll go nowhere with intelligence but no drive or ambition.
