Can you record from tape to this? Backing up home videos etc? Is it a really good deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

doubt if it can pause live tv a very very handy feature that panasonic recorders can do.

It's a whole lot cheaper than the Panasonic recorders too. I don't know weather(sp?) to get this or not. I might wait and get one of the HDD recorders.

im guessing youd need a hard drive for that on a cheapo player,
doing it on a dvd would be a bit tricky for this price,

still it does say "real time playback", which is either the most standard feature of all time, or suggesting something of the playback while recording type....

    anyway,

if ive 170 euros in my hand next thursday i may just grab one :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

panasonics do it on even their 'cheepo' non hard disc players using ram discs.
i wonder whether it can , if its able to its very very good value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

    it would be,
but arent ram discs in cases like minidiscs?

this one only supprts +r, which is klind of putting me off though.
im thinking it would be next to impossible to do random access read/write on a bog standard dvd recorder like this.

if anyone got one last time around would they let us know the full specs that theyve gotten out of it please.

also, on a side note, dont lidl usually put better featured stuff out a few weeks after aldi,
im thinking they had a dvd recorder with xvid playback and a card reader built in last time. anyone know for sure?

they come in cases to protect them, u can leave them in them or u can take them out. either way,the machine deals with it. panasonic recommend leaving them in the cases for reliability(keep them clean and dust free)

    interesting, never used them before,

the aldi one only supports dvd+r/rw so i guess thats nipping that one in the bud.

maybe not...i read some review on a dvd recorder somewhere i think and it was able to pause live tv on dvd rw discs. however even some harddisc ones cant do it.

the only way to find out for sure is to read a review i suppose mayb tevions website?

Havent a clue about this pausing live tv,someone explain.thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

simple but brilliant. u can record a program that starts at 7 and runs to 9 pm. but u come home at 7.45 and want to watch from the start at 7.45 while it continues to record. with this 'chasing play' feature aka pause live tv u can watch the program from the beginning while its still recording! and keep fast forwarding til it reaches and catches up to the live point.

handy if u are want to avoid ads. just start watching it say 20 min after it starts and fast forward thru all the ads!i would say its an essential feature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Quite a nifty feature.. So you could also record and watch from the start and somebody calls to the door, you just pause and play and its recorded 5 minutes ahead and everything you watch from the unpaused time is recorded basically?

how would you find out if this has that?

With this can you pause recording for say, ejecting a tap and putting in a new one, finding the part you want to record etc?

    first question- yes
    second question-look at tevion/medions website?reviews?buy one and see :D
third question-not sure what u are trying to do. dvd recorders dont use tapes they use dvd discs.

I'm talking about the tapes for backing up home movies and the likes to DVD. It's not me who's thinking of buying it, my dad mentioned he'd like one before to do it and it would have to be easy to use etc. Hook up VCR to be able to record off tapes and all. :)

what u want to do is to edit videos and burn them to dvd correct?
to do that is easy. u need a tv tuner card for ur pc(about 30-40 euros. u plug ur vcr into the pc and can then record the playback. later u can edit it and burn it to dvd. i doubt if a dvd recorder would do what u needed easily.

theyre all fairly equal these days,

id rather it did +-/r/rw/dl instead of one format.
means ill be needing to watch out for good versions of a certain type of disc at a good price,
rather than just buying anything thats cheap + good quality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

It would be for my dad though, he wouldn't have a clue how to edit things from a VCR on a computer or any of that so he would have to do it from the likes of one of these.... if that's possible?? Does anyone know if you can pause it yet :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

well macrovision will probably prevent vcr to dvd recording.

i think what your trying to say....
it cant record tv without a disc, so you cant pause and switch discs.
you can stop the dvd recording to switch a tape in the vcr and then start recording again, much like you can do with tape recorders and vhs ;)

Lads, I think ye are missing something here regarding pausing live tv.This involves both reading and writing to the media simultaneously.Correct me if I'm wrong but surely there isn't a hope in hell of the access time being quick enough for this. (as opposed to a HD recorder) ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

then how do panaonic non hard drive recorders do it?
i have a hard drive panasonic that can be used just with ram discs and the hard drive off and it can do it. also i have read reviews on ones where they can do it on rw discs. there must be 2 lasers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Would they not highlight this feature if it was included though? Sounds quite good to forget to mention if selling something.

Panasonic DVD recorders can do this with their DVD-RAM discs as it is part of the DVD-RAM spec
    http://www.panasonic.co.uk/dvd-recorders/dmres10/index.htm

Pioneers DVD REcorders can also do it with DVD-RW in VR mode:
    http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=8532&taxonomy_id=62-125

However I haven't seen any of the cheaper Aldi/Lidl DVD recorders without a HD being able to do this yet.

Personally I have a Tivo (like Sky+) which was one of the first devices to have this capability and all I can saw is that it is an amazing feature and will change how you watch TV.

I never watch a show from when it starts anymore, for instance if 24 starts at 9, then I record it and start watching it from 9:15, I can then skip through the ads using the 30 second skip button, I simply don't watch ads anymore and I can easily pause a show if someone rings etc. You just can't understand how good it is until you have experienced it.

Agreed- I have a HD/DVD recorder and would not be without it. When I go to my mums or my girlfs house I start trying to pause tv there too, but it doesn't work :( It's the sorta thing you don't know you need till you have one.

There's no way this will "rec+playback"
Try Ram discs or RW in VR mode unless you have a HD.
For 170 Yoyo's it looks a good basic DVD Recorder but that's it.
Wonder how long it will be before we see the first sub 150 Euro DVD Recorder.
My prices on who'll be first?

    DID 10/1

    POWER CITY 7/2

    LIDL 2/1

    ALDI 2/1

    SUPERQUINN 10/1

PEATS Would be a billion but I can't get that many 0's in! :D

Would it be a problem to hook this unit up to, and record from Sky Digital ?
If so, would it be possible to edit out ads and tranfer to dvd with pcs burner ie,would pc be able to work with recordings made with set top recorder ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

If it can indeed pull off the time shift function on DVD+RW I'd be well impressed for the price.Although I'm going to hang in there until the price of HD based recorders fall...

lads i never had a dvd recorder

can ye explain how they are so good

why would one want to buy one

do they make any noise while its recording

    Feck's sake..
Went down at 9.45 (just now), and Aldi Parnell St had sold out 15 mins before..
    Any left in the country?
    I'll give a bounty of €20...

    Ordered one from Jes.de.. Happy..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

It's the cheapest DVD Recorder on the market all right but that's all.
Would be interested in hearing the comments from anybody who's bought one
as I'm sure LIDL will have the same shortly (they do on nearly everthing else these days).

Don't all rush guys but Aldi in Lucan (Fonthill) had (according to mrs. hansov) a good few of these left at 1.35 pm. Perhaps I'll take another route home as I have probably now created a traffic jam! :D
