Having become an owner of the lovely 2005 fp TFT by Dell recently, I was disappointed to notice that the factory presets just don't do black as good as they should.
I only really noticed just how bad my black contrasts were last night when I put my laptop (dell WSXGA+) beside it and the difference was chalk and cheese.

So what I need to know is what's the best way to about changing the colours/contrast/brightness/gamma to get as good a picture as possible.
Are there monitor "test pages" to work with?
Should I use the settings on my graphics card controller or on the monitor itself?
Anyone else got a 2005fp that's done this? Anything else I should know?

There are commerical tools out there to assist you, but I've never found a free product. What they will do is display various patterns on screen and you will need to adjust your various settings in order to achieve the best result for each pattern.

...or the cheap and cheerful way would be to just play around with the settings until you get an image you are happy with! You can always reset them back to the factory settings if you mess up.

For some odd reason the Contrast slider in the OSD settings menu is greyed out. Instead of trying to work it with the monitor I just used the nVidia view manager with some red, green, blue, white and black screens I made.
Looks 10X better now that there's an actual difference between black and 20 shades of dark grey...
